Conversational Snippets

Sometimes though snippets of a Russians current life back home, of times and cultural adjustments made under the communist rule are told and here I listen hard, I put the matchsticks in my eyes to keep them open and nod and prod when the opportunity arises.

oh yes, I have read about it in another article over here and then I've even experienced this myself with the Russians, where there's much beauty, little English is enough.. however, they always look far more mature than their age, even this girl looks like in her twenties

Oh My God. Yeah, I have read the nonsense about my country, but this article is the most monstrous article I've ever seen! The first anonymous is right - forget about bears, balalaika and especially MAFIA! It's the last century! Why do you think all other countries are develop and Russia doesn't?!

Why do people always associate Russia with communism? Why don`t WE associate Italy or Germany with fascism anymore? Why are we selfish because of our heritage? Every nation has its own heritage and our is one of the richest and we are not influenced by it in such way. How can people judge us if they don`t live in our conditions? We are all different and if someone is not shy at all it doesn`t mean we all aren`t shy. Of course there are many general opinions, and some of them are true but mostly we don`t have our own opinion but only something that has been already said.

I'm from Russia myself. :) Our country is really interesting, beauty and amazing place. Summer is hot, spring is the time of blossom, autumn is a rainy season, and winter is snowy and cold. But no matter what every season in Rassia is beautiful and unusual. Come to us and you'll see everything with your own eyes! :) Talking about people... Every person in Russia as different as millions stars at the sky. There are nice, friendly, optimistic, honest people. But also you can meet an angry, unfriendly, sad persons... According to a previous comment I can say there are really some people in Russia looks older their age, but not all really. :) I think it depends on our attitude to life (not only in Russia I guess). If you're pessimist you'll look like an old dry tree. And the opposite if you're cheerful you'll be always as beautiful flower. :)

"corruptness and selfishness that rears its ugly head in life today."
Overall, a well-written piece, but the end is ridiculous.
The Russian People, as a whole, are not Selfish, and certainly not corrupt. If you found yourself in a random American village, and walked into a house, what would happen??
In Russia, they'd always greet you with a full table and some vodka.
While yes, the law enforcement leaves a bit to be desired, and the government isn't perfect, the fact is, the people aren't selfish in the slightest bit - rather some of the kindest, warmest, most sincere people you will ever meet.
There isn't that same artificiality in Russians that some experience in Puritan America - the people are more real, honest.
If this one captain made you think Russians are selfish, I'm very sorry. Go visit Disneyland Paris.

Good article. Everything is true but… the author describes his meeting only with several people and it’s impossible to say that it is about all Russians. Such problems exist but they are not a communism consequence. They are mentality and ill breeding problems. I guess the best way to make sure that everything is not too bad to come to Russia. Welcome! Anyway a friendliness, generosity and hospitality are main qualities of Russian character.

well, I haven't traveled a lot through Russia, but I know a lot of Russians and from what I have observed and read out here, they are proud of their country. However, i was just wandering, do people in the Far Eastern Russia feel themselves strongly connected, speaking both of political and cultural identity, with Moscow?

It's pretty hard to speak about your own country the way that it really is. Of course, there always be good sides and bad sides of life speaking of whole country. No matter what country that would be Russia or USA, France or Spain and so on.
But i'll try to speak about my country the way that it really is in Russia, i can write for hours but i'll try to bring up most important moments:
Moscow is very modern and historical city. It has everything you can think of: museums, theaters, movie theaters, circuses, casinos, parks, clubs, bars, shops for all social groups (from super expencive to kind of normal prices) and so on. It has everything...
But Moscow is not Russia. I mean that not whole Russian population lives in Moscow. People have to face terrible conditions sometimes and have to survive. It happens not because they are lazy, it happens just because they have salary which is a lot lower than living wage. But as some "special" people get super high salary (stealing money from common budget) we have "normal" salary per person - summing all money and dividing them by the number of people. So it means exfoliation of society. EVERY country has it. But i think we have it pronounced.
People here love to listen music. And it's not all about Britney Spears man! All kinds of styles, all kind of bands - starting from rock
music through pop, trance, r'n'b, rap, hip hop, drum'n'bass and so on, and from American bands which are might not be known to all americans like some underground bands and finishing with all kinds of russian bands, whose lyrics and music are really impressive.
We have best specialists in the world of all spheres in sciences. So that's why a lot of Russians are welcomed in American universities as students and professors. Our education is great, but i thing that the system of education itself is not very good. The amount of knowledge university offers you is tremendous and it covers all sides of sciences.
We have beautiful women AND handsome men :)!!!
As well as every other country does!!! Can't say about the most beautiful but apparently
we are the most beautiful :)!
There are always those people who kill others, steal smb's money no matter what you call them mafia, killers or in some other way. And unfortunately they are everywhere in the world in all social layers.
Rich history, beautiful nature, different people, huge country with amazing culture, traditions and
unique way of development - that's Russia!!
