San Marino is a tiny landlocked republic whose independence has faced many near misses in history. Being totally surrounded by Italian territory, this mini-state does not lack uniqueness, although it is hard to find in its capital city. The non-tourist area is where you can rub elbows with the natives and taste local meals for reasonable prices.
