Antarctica is the 5th largest continent, nearly twice the size of Australia, and belongs to no one. Although several countries have laid claim to parts of it, the continent is governed by the Antarctic Treaty, signed by 50 countries, which keeps it politically and economically free. Antarctica is in fact a desert, it is the driest continent on earth, as well as the coldest with temperatures ranging from -15C in the summer and all the way down to -80C in the winter. Yet bring some sun-screen, as in summer there is an overwhelming amount of sunshine. One of the most appealing facts about Antarctica is its unaffected ecosystem, there are no cities and nearly no permanent settlements outside of a handful research stations on the continent, and bio-contamination is severely controlled, the introduction of outside plant or animal life is strictly prohibited.
