Uzbekistan has only been independent for a little over 20 years, but it has a rich history and plenty of interesting things to see and do. There are beautiful mosques and you can climb the 47 meter-high Kalyan Minaret and visit the mosque itself outside prayer hours. Buy your souvenirs in the lively bazaars in Bukhara and Tashkent. The Juma Mosque complex in Kokland is a fascinating museum with a 22 meter-high minaret. Tashkent is the home of the State Fine Arts Museum of Uzbekistan, the Art Gallery of Uzbekistan and the Museum of Applied Arts. In Samarkand visit the superb 15th century Observatory of Ulugh Beg. Explore the incredible caves in Boi-Bulok, Kugitang, Baisuntau and Tian Shan. Trek in the Chatkal Range and look for snow tigers and rare grey bears in Chatkalsky Reserve.
