The Research Center is situated on a working farm in the Atlantic Rainforest, in the southeast of the State of Minas Gerais, 320 km northeast of Rio de Janeiro and 300 km southeast of the state capital, Belo Horizonte. The research area covers 200ha of rainforest in different stages of regeneration (partially logged primary forest, older regrowth of over 25 years on partially cleared land, and recent regrowth).
We carry out research in four defined priority areas - the socio-economic context of the forest, income generating alternatives, natural resource management and forest restoration. These areas are designed to meet the needs of the local area and help us fulfil our mission to make conservation of the rainforest more attractive than its destruction. We also do biological surveys, to help us understand our environment better. Since the Center is part of a working farm and deeply rooted in the local community, our prime concern is practical applied research that answers farmers' questions, especially as they relate to problems of natural resource management. The development of alternative management systems that provide economic incentives for landowners to preserve their forest lands is an urgent need in ensuring the long-term survival of the forest.
