The Research Center is situated on a working farm in the Atlantic Rainforest, in the southeast of the State of Minas Gerais, 320 km northeast of Rio de Janeiro and 300 km southeast of the state capital, Belo Horizonte. The research area covers 200ha of rainforest in different stages of regeneration (partially logged primary forest, older regrowth of over 25 years on partially cleared land, and recent regrowth).
The Center has defined priority areas into which the research should fit (in taxonomic sciences, systemic sciences, environmental management and social sciences). Since the Center is part of a working farm and deeply rooted in the local community, our prime concern is practical applied research on the process of land degradation, and the dynamics of biodiversity conservation with particular reference to forest edges and remnants. The development of alternative management systems that provide economic incentives for landowners to preserve their forest lands is an urgent need in ensuring the long-term survival of the forest.
