Founded in 1632, the University of Tartu is the largest and most comprehensive university in Estonia. Today it has 18000 students, including 600 international, and is famous for research-based education and lively student traditions. The University of Tartu has 11 faculties, 6 colleges and several specialized research institutes.

Autumn semester dates: late Aug - mid Jan (it is possible to finish early and before Christmas)
Spring semester dates: early Feb - mid June
Application deadlines: May 1st for autumn semester, Nov 1st for spring semester
Credits are in European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), normal load is 24-34 ECTS per semester, 1 US credit is approx. 2 ECTS credits.
Faculty Information:
Courses in Baltic Studies and Transition Studies study abroad programs are delivered mostly by local teaching staff, some courses are delivered by visiting international staff. Instruction is completely in English. English is also very widely spoken outside of the classroom, in administrative units of the university, in stores, and even in public sector services.
Other Activities:
Students are offered to take part in group study trips to Latvia, to Tallinn (Estonian capital), to Russia at extra cost. Students get access to University sports center at a discounted price. Student social life is coordinated by Erasmus Student Network, which organizes numerous events for students, e.g. international food days, week end trips, sports events, parties, and more (usually at a very affordable price).
The main highlight of student life each semester is autumn and spring Student days, when the Rector hands the power over to students. These days are filled with events and attract students from all over Estonia to Tartu, Estonia's academic capital!
Facility Information:
Lectures for these programs are held in modern study rooms of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Baltic Studies Center and EuroCollege. Free wireless Internet is available in most study buildings, in the library and even in the city hall square!

- Residence permit and medical insurance for Estonia (required by Estonian law, approx. 500 EUR/semester, note: USA, Canada, EU citizens do not need a visa to enter Estonia but need to apply for a residence permit upon arrival)
- Meals (approximately 1000 EUR/semester, there is a kitchen for each 3 double rooms in the dorm)
- Transportation to program location (depends on your country of origin)
- Trips around Estonia and to other countries are offered during the semester at extra cost
Total in-country additional costs estimated: approx. 2250-2500 EUR/semester, paid by the student to service providers directly.
