Non-Ordinary Tours for Non-Ordinary People

Artindex is an independent information agency, created by an initiative of St.Petersburg artists in 2002. Today it is a registered trademark uniting series of informative projects in the field of culture and arts. Artindex area of business includes publishing annual art catalogs, managing electronic art databases, conducting art exhibitions and art tours activities.

St. Petersburg, often being called a "cultural capital", nevertheless lacks services offering information about contemporary culture and art of our city. After visiting the Hermitage and the Russian Art Museum, our guests often wonder where all the contemporary artworks can be seen. Some even think that while during soviet times all new art movements were forbidden, now works of "socialist realism" is somewhat "hidden" in unknown basements.

Unfortunately, St.Petersburg lacks a real museum of contemporary art. One can only rely on temporary exhibitions or on searching for contemporary art works in local galleries. However, many galleries are closed for visitors and don't let in without a special invitation. Besides, often in art salons and art galleries they don't offer you a complete information about artists but rather show only those works that are offered for sale or souvenirs. In majority of cases sales people in art stores are far from being professional and competent in the art field. From another hand, artists themselves are not willing to accept unknown visitors to their art studios.

To help with many of these issues ArtTours program was introduced in 2004 offering a wide spectrum of art-related activities. Its goal is to promote artists of St. Petersburg and their artwork to art specialists and general public through all possible means, including offering our annual art catalogs that present thousands of contemporary art works, as well as annual art exhibitions, extended art databases, and special art tours that help potential art buyers discover new art and meet contemporary artists. Please refer to the information below and visit related web pages to find out more about ArtTours programs.

Art Tours: ArtTours programs offer a variety of tours related to the art field of St. Petersburg. It's not limited to pictorial art only, we offer tours to various crafts workshops, to restoration shops, to theater rehearsals, to ballet "behind the curtains", and to many other unique and unusual places.

It is quite impossible to list all ArtTours programs, so we recommend to contact an ArtTours representative for all your inquiries. Below is an example of an art tour that usually lasts all day.

Visits to pictorial art workshops are without limit; visits to other creative workshops (restoration, glass, smith work, etc.) are limited to one visit per tour; visits to jewelry workshops should be planned in advance and additional charges might be required.

Workshops: Visit workshops and art studios to meet artists, watch them in creation process, and acquire their artworks. Among ArtTours artists are well-known masters working in glass, jewelry (Faberge traditions), smithy works, stone-carving, and many other fields. Non-ordinary tours: This is what creates a unique atmosphere of St. Petersburg. Of course, we can bring you to the Hermitage or any other famous museum. See detailed information on our web site, in the "non-ordinary tours" section.

Art Shop: Artindex art catalogs are your best choice when searching for a certain work of art. They are published annually and contain images of artworks created by talented artists working in all kinds of art fields, in all different styles. For those who didn't see our catalogs yet, we provide a virtual tour on our online gallery, which is available at art-index.org (by the end of May 2006, more than 5,500 images presented, updated weekly). See detailed information on our web site, in the "art shop" section.

We can also provide a comfortable car or a mini-bus with a personal driver, as well as helping you with accommodations and visa support (see details).

We suggest contacting ArtTours specialists who will help you choosing a certain art program or master class that will suite your art interests. We will do everything possible to make your visit to St. Petersburg and acquaintance with ArtTours programs the most pleasant, cognitive, and fascinating adventure in the unique art world of St. Petersburg.

Let it be your tour, your choice. Yes, we will create an individual art program which will suite you the best, but the choice — where to go and what to see — will depend only on you.
