Along the Grand Canal, opposite from the Rialto market place, stands one of the most famous palaces in Venice, known as the Ca' d'Oro (the House of Gold), a well preserved example of a Venetian merchant's home. No domestic building in Venice so perfectly expresses both the Venetian love for surface decoration for its own sake, and the Venetian resistance to the organizing principles of mainland Gothic and Renaissance architecture.
Ca' d'Oro contains a rich collection of paintings, frescoes, bronzes, sculptures and tapestries. From the palace balcony you will enjoy a view of the Grand Canal and its water traffic as well as of the colorful Rialto Market. We will continue walking through the quiet neighbourhood of Cannaregio, passing bridges, canals and fondamenta, experiencing the genuine Venetian atmosphere, and reach the Madonna dell'Orto Church, one of the most important Venetian Gothic buildings. The painter Jacopo Tintoretto lived just around the corner, and chose this Church, where he left many important masterpieces, to be his burial place. Notes:
