Orcas Kayak Tours - Kayak with Orcas! We have long specialized in close encounters with wildlife, especially orcas, or “killer whales.” For those who only have a few days or prefer a shorter trip than our classic six-day expeditions, our Wild Orca Adventures will give you an unmatched, shorter kayaking adventure and along with it, a fantastic opportunity to encounter orcas by kayak in their home waters.
Your Itinerary
Day 1: A water taxi ride past islands and through emerald green channels begins each Wild Orca Adventure. All our gear is ready and waiting at your comfortable wilderness camp. You’ll be in the heart of the Inside Passage, a thousand-mile, sheltered waterway stretching from the northwestern US to Alaska, including all of the western mainland shore of British Columbia, Canada. Surrounded by the snowcapped Coast Range on the east and the rugged Vancouver Island Range to the west, the Wild Orca paddling area offers unsurpassed scenery and wilderness. An introduction to your camp and to sea kayaking are your first orders of business. Then, you’ll spend the rest of the day exploring the area by kayak, looking for orcas and other wildlife. You might like to try fishing for salmon before dinnertime! Included: (L), (D).
Day 2: Each day of a kayaking trip is planned to take into consideration the ever-present tidal currents. Combined with the varying wind conditions, each day is different. A typical Day 2 will be a morning and an afternoon kayak outing, of course planning our routes to encounter orcas and whales when they’re nearby. Your adventure in these remote islands should bring you in contact with seals, porpoises, orcas and whales who feed at the salmon hot spots and in the currents that bring small fish to the surface. A kayak is the ideal boat from which to view them. Eagles are almost always in view, perched near their nests, soaring above the waters, and diving to catch a meal. We’ll listen to the underwater calls of the orcas with our hydrophones and we’ll likely hear their above-water blows as they pass by. Included: (B), (L), (D).
Day 3: We’ll start with breakfast and a morning of sea kayaking. Whale watching is always a priority; we’ll keep our eyes and ears open for any signs of whales in the area. We’ll also monitor our network of whale researchers and watchers by way of our marine radios to make sure we don’t miss any opportunities to encounter whales, porpoises, or dolphins. We can view the spectacular Vancouver Island mountain range from our kayak. For bird watchers, we’ll keep an eye out for Great Blue Herons and Marbled Murrelets. We’ll take an hour or two for lunch on a secluded beach. We’ll kayak another couple of hours, maybe stopping on a small island for a short hike looking for animal tracks before heading back to camp. Included: (B), (L), (D).
Day 4: This is our last morning in camp on our Wild Orca Adventure. Another hearty breakfast will get us ready for another morning of kayaking. One final chance to encounter the magnificent orcas by kayak. After lunchtime, we’ll be picked up by our water taxi for our ride back to Port McNeill. We may even spot a pod of orcas en route. Included: (B), (L).
