Lake Lanier is located within the counties of Hall, Lumpkin, Forsyth, Dawson, and Gwinnett Counties. It is located 40 miles North of Atlanta. Lake Lanier was built in 1957 by the Army Corp of Engineers for the purpose of generating power. The lake encompasses approximately 38,000 acres and has approximately 540 miles of shoreline. The average depth at Lake Lanier is 60 feet. Lake Sydney Lanier was named after the poet (Sydney Lanier) who wrote "Song of the Chattahoochee". The lake is fed by the Chattahoochee and Chestatee Rivers. It is the largest lake that is entirely in Georgia and is visited by approximately 20 million visitors each year. Largemouth Bass, Spotted Bass, Striped Bass, White Bass, Walleye, Yellow Perch, Bream, Crappie, Catfish, Carp, Trout and Gar all inhabit this large impoundment. Bait fish include: Shad, Spot Tails, Gizzard Shad, and Blueback Herring.
