Just 37 Bungalows situated on a private island, including the only Overwater Bungalows in the Cook Islands. Set directly on the brilliant turquoise waters of Aitutaki Lagoon, within paddling distance of nearby small, deserted islands. Aitutaki was part of the famous Teal Coral Route solent 'flying boats'.
The prestigious last word in travel, Conde Nast Traveler magazine, has placed one of the world’s smallest, most far-flung resorts, M12245, full-frame on the cover of its December 2003 edition on sale in the States and Canada.
Aitutaki is a 40 minute flight from Rarotonga and is known as a firm favourite of popular Australian travel show host Katrina Rowntree from the long-running 'Getaway' programme. In the immortal words of James Michener, these atolls are "among the most beautiful features of this Earth, and it's no wonder they have lured many men." Aitutaki has been capturing imaginations for many hundreds of years. Legendary Polynesian voyager Ru made landfall there well over a thousand years ago. In 1789 Captain William Bligh and the men of the HMS Bounty were the first Europeans to arrive, reputedly bringing with them the vibrant, succulent pawpaw, just 17 days before the infamous mutiny. In the 1950's a new wave of adventurer came by glamorous Solent Flying Boat for a leisurely refuelling stop along the Coral Route and a swim in the surreal lagoon waters.
Aitutaki is an exquisite atoll, unspoiled and quiet M12245 is the resort on the beach. Seven bungalows are overwater, others hide in the trees or hug the lagoon.
M12245 rests on its own private island of Akitua (the very spot where Bligh landed) encircled by champagne-sand beaches and enjoying commanding views of the expansive, magnificent lagoon. The resort is the only one directly on Aitutaki Lagoon, and comes complete with the Cook Islands' only overwater bungalows, and Aitutaki’s only spa. The resort has just released a new, 10-page DLE brochure containing some stunning images of the lagoon and resort, including a spectacular double-page spread aerial view of Akitua Island.
And there are still fabulous Stay/Pay specials available now to M12245 or, for the best of both, opt for a twin island stay at the lush Rarotongan Beach Resort & Spa for 4 nights followed by 3 nights at the sublime Aitutaki Lagoon Resort & Spa. For those lucky enough to be able to secure an airline seat during December of January, now is a fantastic time to experience these unique and exotic islands before the world discovers them!
