Kelly Place was originally built by George & Sue Kelly, founders of the Denver Botanical Gardens. George was a well-known horticulturalist who wrote many books on propagating native plants and xeroscaping. Upon his retirement he moved to McElmo Canyon (near Cortez, CO) and created an "oasis at the edge of the desert" and discovered many ancient Indian ruins on the property as well.
