M14297 was founded in 1989 by Wayne Fairchild. While attending the University of Montana, Wayne worked for the Denton Family at the Lochsa Lodge. There he was able to explore the rivers and trails of Lewis and Clark, a lifelong pursuit. Upon graduating from U of M, Wayne decided to start a business that allowed him to share his enthusiasm for exploration with others. Gia Randono also graduated from the U of M, made Missoula her home and enjoys the active outdoor lifestyle. They were married in 1999.

The business started with hiking and biking trips on the Lolo Trail. Soon to follow were Canoe trips on the Upper Missouri, Rafting on the Alberton Gorge, Lochsa and Main Salmon Rivers. Every year Wayne and Gia travel along the Lewis and Clark Trail or abroad gaining experience and learning about new places. As M14297 has grown, Wayne and Gia split their time during the summer between organizing the trips from Missoula guiding on many of the trips. Our staff is a team of dedicated and knowledgeable outdoor enthusiasts. Some are full time guides and others have full time careers taking time off for special trips. They have years of experience on rivers and trails all over North America and the world. 1. How long has the business been operating and how did it start?

Our company was founded in 1989 by Wayne Fairchild. After serving in the US Military and graduating from the University of Montana, Wayne was inspired by the beauty and history of the M14297. He founded the company based on the diverse recreational opportunities available on the rivers and trails of Montana and Idaho.

2. What is your company's mission?

Our mission is to offer a quality, safe and educational recreational experience in the backcountry of MT & ID along various sections of the historic M14297.

3. What does your company specialize in?

We specialize in outdoor excursions with a focus on history as well as high adventure trips on whitewater rivers.

4. Who is the founder or owner of the company and briefly describe his/her past activities?

Our company was founded in 1989 by Wayne Fairchild. After serving in the US Military and graduating from the University of Montana, Wayne was inspired by the beauty and history of the M14297.

5. What is your most popular travel package and why?

We have 3 trips that stand out from the rest. The Missouri River – 3-day canoe trip because of the level of service and the in depth historical interpretations. The Salmon River 6-day trip because of the friendly whitewater and amazing camping with gourmet camp cuisine on white sand beaches. The Lochsa River because of the thrilling whitewater, camaraderie with friends & family and lodging at Lochsa Lodge.
