Active Earth is a tour company for adventurous people on holiday who want to go hiking or trekking in New Zealand’s wonderful National parks. We do other activities including paddling sea kayaks, caving, riding dune boards AND we relax beside campfires and just hang out in remote and beautiful wilderness areas of New Zealand. We get off the beaten track to many places in our National Parks that no other companies (and few individuals) ever get to.

Sometimes we stay in simple lodges with good facilities, but more often we sleep in mountain huts or camp far away from any civilisation. For many people the nights in the bush are a magical experience, and one of the highlights of their holiday in New Zealand. Our small group tours have a maximum of 11 people. Enjoy guided hikes on volcanoes and through rainforest on our trips - fantastic vacation value at around NZ$180 per day.

Hike New Zealand our way:

We tour through New Zealand, stopping in beautiful National Parks to go trekking or hiking. Each hike or trek lasts two to three days before we return to the bus and continue on our way to the next park. There is time to recover in-between these multi-day hiking segments when we go lake/sea kayaking, caving or thermal park exploring or go for short walks and hikes.

Small group tours:

As well as letting us adventure more it means we don’t scare the locals so much when we show up (people or wildlife!). And we can be flexible enough to make the most of the unexpected things that come our way from time to time – whether it's taking up an invite with a local character, hiking under the full moon over a volcano or simply watching logs float down a flooded river. This is the real New Zealand. We love our job.

Who are our clients?

Enthusiastic people who are reasonably fit and healthy. If you go to the gym, enjoy cycling or running and you have hiked (but don’t necessarily have any previous experience in multi-day hiking or trekking) then you are typical of the sort of person who comes on our trips. We get equal numbers of men and women, most of you are in your 20’s to 40’s (but by no means exclusively), and you are mostly from Europe, Australia and North America.
