1. How long has the business been operating and how did it start?
Began in 1982 and beginning our 30th year.
2. What is your company's mission?
"We live in a highly developed nation, with very specialized jobs, packed schedules and to-do lists that rival the roll in the bathroom. It is the beginning of the 21st century and we have never been more divorced from the planet that gives us life. I've developed these programs to address a screaming need for us all to get our hands dirty, our feet wet and breathe the musky aroma of earth back into our lungs.Put down that cell phone, go off-line, get out of the race, come outside and play!"
3. What does your company specialize in?
We specialize in guided coastal kayaking trips, sea kayak instruction, Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP), and corporate retreats. We do camping and lodge-based trips in Michigan/Great Lakes area, Alaska, Honduras, Iceland and more. We are known for professional certified instructors, outstanding food, and quality equipment that help create an enjoyable learning environment for all experience levels. Since 1984, our expert guides, passion for the outdoors, and high standards have made us a terrific find for individuals, small groups and corporations!
4. Who is the founder or owner of the company and briefly describe his/her past activities?
Michael Gray founded M15163 in 1984 a couple of years after getting a degree in Environmental Interpretation at MSU. With nearly 20 years in the business, Michael is one of the most experienced instructors and guides in the Great Lakes region, if not the country as a whole! He's led trips all over the world including Alaska, New Zealand and Central America. Of particular note is Michael's reputation as a phenomenal backcountry cook. Our guests often say they don't eat as well at home or even in restaurants! Michael's cooking presentations/demonstrations are among the most popular sessions at the countries leading kayak symposiums, and his articles appear in major kayak publications, websites, and, by popular demand, his upcoming cookbook! Having taught outdoor skills and environmental workshops all of his adult life, Michael interprets wild places with warmth and respect.
5. What is your most popular travel package and why?
Our weeklong kayaking vacations in the Bay Islands of Honduras. Popular because the standard of service always exceeds clients' expectations, the area is amazing and the people warm and friendly.
