1  Diana Vermaak Fish River Canyon Hike 2009-09-03
Would just like to share my experience on the hike we just did a few weeks ago. If I can say it was the best and the worsted experience in my life and I enjoyed ... view more it very much. The first day was quit hard going down for about 900m into the canyon, there are beautiful surroundings. There are the most beautiful rock formations and little plant growing against them. At the bottom there is an amazing view of the river and the canyon sides. The next morning early we had to cross the river for the first time, the water was extremely cold. From there we walked over rocks and boulder the whole day, and because of the downhill of the day before our legs and knees were pretty fragile.

The third day we walk for about 4 hours when we finally reached the end of the first leg of the trail. Where the Sulphur Palms springs are, it was very nice to have a warm bath for a change. And luckily from here on the trail became easier and more manageable, but the temperatures were very high and it’s quit a story to find some shade in the middle of the day. On the fourth day there were some shortcuts which we didn’t take and decided to walk around and explore the scenery, which where very beautiful we came across some of the wild horses which run free in the canyon. It was a very long stretched that day and we walked for 14 hours straight to catch up on the hours lost due to some injuries we had earlier.

The last day we got up very early, we were so excited to get to the end of our hike Ai-Ais, again we had to walk over stones and boulders for a few hours, and then out of the blue we saw the walls of Ai-Ais, we almost ran ahead but couldn’t. At Ai-Ais we had nice and warm showers, and then a breakfast from heaven. We went into the spa and relaxed in the warm water pools for a while.

I can recommend it for any adventure seeking person.
