Our company offers full service, exotic, guided, cross-cultural explorations, nature safaris, treks and eco-tours in remote areas of Asia, Africa, the Americas, and the Pacific. The travel group should be small enough not to overwhelm the experience, we want to interact directly and respectfully with local people and natural environments, and, rather than drain local resources, we believed we should make a contribution to their preservation. We were committed to the idea that local people and communities must tangibly benefit from this idea which came to be called eco-travel and ecotourism.

Now there are many more people working with us and many more destinations in our tour portfolio. We added new trip destinations only after we knew them well and had established personal relationships with the people who would be operating our programs. Our task is to provide you with intimate access to other worlds. Every year we are as enthusiastic about each new trip as we were about our first trek.

M17099 creates nature and culture adventures in more than 50 destinations around the world, taking equal care with both group trips and custom-designed, private departures.

1. How long has the business been operating and how did it start?

M17099 grew from our founders' gratifying experiences in the Peace Corps and as teachers, conservation workers and travelers in Nepal in the early 1970’s. They learned how inspirational and satisfying culturally-respectful and environmentally-sensitive travel can be. After returning to graduate school at the University of Michigan, they longed to revisit the Himalayas. In 1978, they sat in their student apartment and typed up (on a typewriter!) a one-page flyer inviting "curious, hearty souls" to join us on a "Journey to Nepal." They were clear about what they wanted to do: share a place that they knew and loved with others who were open and eager for new adventures.

M17099 creates and delivers extraordinary guided adventures that fulfill dreams, stretch understandings, protect the natural environment, support traditional cultures, and foster connections between people.

3. What does your company specialize in?

Our longstanding relationships with friends and partners in the far corners of the world distinguishes M17099 and allows us to give travelers personal experiences in each of our unique destinations.

4. Who is the founder or owner of the company and briefly describe his/her past activities?

Joan and Will Weber founded the company in 1978, while they were graduate students at the University of Michigan. Will, a former journalist, Peace Corps Volunteer, and conservation worker, was studying natural resources. Joan, a teacher, was studying psychology and education. Since the company's founding, JOURNEYS has been the Webers' life work and passion, and they have brought their talents to bear in nurturing the growth of the company. In 2013, M17099' 35th anniversary year, they look forward to passing the baton of leadership on to their daughter Robin Pollak, an expert in experiential education with a degree in business, who will continue to carry the mantle of M17099' longstanding values.

5. What is your most popular travel package and why?

With over 50 destinations to choose from, it's hard to name one most popular trip or destination. Hikers have long loved treks in Nepal, where the colorful culture and hospitality of our seasoned staff nearly match the spectacular Himalayan scenery. Our well-loved guides in Tanzania show travelers a stunning array of huge animals and lead the most intrepid in climbing Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak. The colors and textures of Guatemalan art and celebration lure craft-lovers. And the tapestry of nature, arts and religious life in Indonesia offer unlimited depth for exploration. What our travelers love is that we help them pick the right trip and put together the details with care.

6. What is the best compliment you received from a client?

Beverley, a recent traveler, wrote: "Let me say the service you have provided in booking this trip has been great. What is somewhat surprising is that some more expensive travel firms often have staff who are not familiar with the trips they are handling and are sometimes quite indifferent to the client.
