Our pride and Joy is “Sydney Sundancer” our ketch rigged motor sailing yacht that combines the stability and comfort of a motor boat with the grace and serenity of a sailing yacht. She is super luxuriously fitted in teak below deck and there is a large canopy that extends virtually the whole length of the vessel giving perfect protection in all weathers. Lynne and I spent nearly 4 years project managing her construction and since launching in 1986, she has been our “floating home” for more than 6 months, each year.
We operate “Sydney Sundancer,” which is licensed to carry more than 70 passengers plus crew on the enclosed waters Sydney Harbour, during the Australian summer and have won the prestigious Australian Bridal Industry Award for Excellence for the Best Harbour Wedding Reception Vessel every year since 2003. “Sydney Sundancer” has also been awarded The Australia Day Council’s award for The Best Presented Charter Boat on Sydney Harbour (2001, 2002 and 2007), so you will appreciate just how much effort we invest in making each and every cruise a success.
From June to October, the dry season "Down Under," we sail “Sydney Sundancer” in the tropics (where we limit the number of guests to a maximum of 10 to ensure everyone’s personal comfort at all times, through adequate space). Our guests appreciate the benefit of our unique permit issued by The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority enabling us to access all areas of our "World Heritage" Marine Park - being one of the original operators, our permit is not site specific or limited to a particular section of The Marine Park, so we can introduce our guests to places where time has "stood still" being unaffected by man or machine, pollution or politics - a truly remarkable area in today's modern world!
We welcome guests aboard our yacht with the same enthusiasm that we would welcome friends into our home. Together, we enjoy the wonders of nature in our World Heritage wilderness, both above and below the water. Our guests gain a full appreciation for the beauty of the Australian native landscape because the Islands we visit, were originally part of Australia but were separated from the mainland as the sea level rose following the last ice age. Being qualified scuba divers and snorkelers, we take pleasure in guiding our guests to the best locations for them to experience close encounters with the abundant sea life that has made The Great Barrier Reef world famous.
There will be, no doubt, a great many of you who want to escape from the cold Northern Hemisphere winter to visit Australia in our Summer, however, I would like you to remember back to your school-day geography lessons. In the Earth’s temperate zones, there are 4 seasons – Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter But in the tropics there are only 2 – The Hot Wet and The Warm Dry.
The Hot Wet extends from November to May and this is our "Cyclone Season". Since 1860 Tropical Cyclones ("TC") have caused more than 750 deaths and have sunk or wrecked more than 250 boats! In 1996, TC "Celeste" was responsible for considerable damage in the Whitsunday's. Many people were evacuated from boats (at their own expense) and accommodated on land (also at their own expense). In March 1997, TC Justin threatened hundreds of kilometers of coastline from Cairns (north of the Whitsunday’s) to Mackay (south of Whitsunday’s). Seas in excess of 5 meters (15 feet) were recorded in the Whitsunday area. These extreme Weather phenomenon occur during November to May and this season is characterized by so many wet days that the locals simply refer to it as “The Wet”! The local Tourism Bureau refers to this as the "Green Season" in an attempt to disguise “The Wet”, and encourage tourists to the area all year. Astute travelers will realize that for things to be "Green", requires water (lots and lots of it).
An even greater problem for the traveler who wants to experience the best under-water, is the prevailing wind direction, which at this time is from the north and east. This means that most of the best locations for snorkeling and scuba diving are not accessible ! However, by far the most important consideration on choosing when to visit the area is the occurrence of Irukandji and Box jelly fish , both of which can be deadly to humans and plague the area during these months. I do not want to be alarmist, so please “google” these jellyfish and you will understand why we do not operate “Sydney Sundancer” in the tropics at this time! There is also a very high "discomfort factor" associated with very high temperatures and very high humidity (especially for guests who have just arrived from a northern hemisphere winter)!
Our intimate knowledge of the area and our more than 20 years of experience ensure our guest's satisfaction is guaranteed and their hopes and expectations for their holiday of a lifetime are exceeded! |
