Warren Jowett together with his wife Marita, run an ecotourism venture in the Canterbury high country. Warren studied botany and geography at the University of Otago and has a M.Sc degree in biogeography. He has a lifetime of interest in conservation and was the founding president of the New Zealand Association of Environmental Education. Warren worked for many years as a teacher of science and biology and for nine years was a secondary school principal. He has written educational books on ecology and mountain beech forest. He is s skilled natural history photographer and is a licentiate of the Photographic Society of New Zealand.

Marita’s qualifications are in Home Economics and education from the University of Otago. She has taught home economics, science, tourism and hospitality at secondary school level. She has a passion for food and enjoys sharing this with others. Their business is a Qualmark Endorsed activity and they have a guiding concession with the Department of Conservation.

You will have a relaxed and enjoyable time with us – there will be few people where we go and our groups are small – minimum of 2, maximum of 6 people.

1. How long has the business been operating and how did it start?

M18847 started in 2000. Warren has a background in botany and geography and he was keen to operate a nature tour business which ran tours in the National Parks and reserves of Canterbury, New Zealand. Marita is an expert cook and enjoys sharing her culinary skills with guests.

2. What is your company's mission?

It is our strong desire to encourage the growth of a conservation ethic in all of our guests through knowledge, experience and action.

3. What does your company specialize in?

Guided nature tours and hiking.

4. Who is the founder or owner of the company and briefly describe his/her past activities?

Marita and Warren Jowett. Marita was a teacher, specialising in home economics, tourism and hospitality. Warren was a school principal, experienced environmental educator and skilled photographer. Founding president of New Zealand Association of Environmental Education.

5. What is your most popular travel package and why?

Alpine Flowers programme. People enjoy the opportunity to discover New Zealand's unique alpine flora in some spectacular national parks.

6. What is the best compliment you received from a client?

Re-booking to join another program. We have had many repeat visits - one client have come back 8 times and two have repeated the Alpine Flowers programme 3 times.
