Our family visited Holbox in July 2008 after spending several days in Tulum. I contacted Roddrigo via their website and he was very helpful, he provided me with ... view more driving directions (we had a rental car) from Tulum to Chiquila to catch the short ferry ride over to Holbox, suggested a parking facility for the rental and he booked us a room in Casa Iguana.
My children loved Holbox, the small village, renting a golf cart, cruising this small laid back island with beautiful sunsets and the best part was the trip to see the whale sharks.
We choose the VIP option and were picked up by golf cart at the hotel in the morning, provided a light breakfast, met our guide (who must be in the water with you at all times) and our captain. While their English was very limited they knew exactly how to show us a great time. We found a pod of dolphins on the way out and stopped for a visit. We found two whale sharks and swam until we were exhausted. Had lunch on the boat then they took us to another snorkeling area where our guide pointed out some sleeping nurse sharks. We even saw a "flock" of golden rays on the return trip. At the end of the adventure, they dropped us off on the beach in front of Casa Iguana.
If you and your family love marine animals, the tropics and wish to see a part of Mexico that looks nothing like Cancun then visit Holbox.

I went to Holbox to swim with the whale sharks the summer of 2008. Now knowing what to expect, I turned the trip over to Roddrigo with Holbox Whale Shark Tours ... view more to handle everything from my transportation from Cancun to Holbox Island. All I did was let him know when I was arriving and when I would leave Cancun. The trip was planned for me and was excellent. If you are ever planning to do an adventure like this, now is the time to plan it and Holbox is the place to go. Swimming with these huge creatures is something that should not be missed and Roddrigo made the entire experience very easy and enjoyable. I would recommend the smaller boats (and crowds) that he supplies and the staff was very attentive. In fact, I enjoyed the experience so much that I insisted that Roddrigo and his family join me for dinner my last night there. Plan on doing at least two days of swimming as the first day will be spent getting used to being in the water with the whale sharks and the second day really to enjoy them.

We set out on Monday, July 21 from St. Louis for Holbox island to see the whale sharks. Our travel arrangements including transfers from the Cancun airport to ... view more Holbox, hotel, whale shark trips, and transfers to Riviera Maya were made through Whale Shark Daddy (Rodrigo) online. We were supposed to arrive in Cancun at 10 a.m. on Monday but our flight was delayed 17 hours because of tropical storm Dolly. Fortunately Whale Shark Daddy has a US phone line and we spoke to him several times throughout the day. He arranged to have a van pick us up at the airport at 3 a.m. on Tuesday. Sure enough the van arrived on time at the otherwise deserted airport and we made the first ferry of the day from Chiquila to the island. Whale Shark Daddy was waiting for us at our hotel (Dreams) when we arrived at 7 a.m. Tuesday morning to tell us that the whale shark trips that day were canceled by the maritime authority in Cancun. Later that day he re-arranged our departure from Holbox on Thursday to later in the day so we could take our second whale shark trip Thursday. Every aspect of our interaction with Daddy and all transfers and excursions worked perfectly. We really appreciated all the help he provided.
By the way the whale sharks were magnificent.
