Our trekking, climbing and ski touring company was founded in 1981 by Directors Anne and Gottlieb Braun-Elwert. In 1991 and 1994, M06144 was a finalist in the New Zealand Tourism Awards. After 30 years of operation M06144 continues to stay at the forefront of mountain guiding in New Zealand.

We are privileged to own the only private hut in Aoraki Mount Cook National Park, which we use for the Ball Pass Alpine Crossing and Introductory Climbing Courses. Another private hut in the Te Kahui Kaupeka Conservation Park allows to run the Tekapo Trek in summer and ski touring and snowshoeing trips in winter.
Questions and Answers
A family-run business, involving our guides in the running of the business, and taking a direct and personal interest in ensuring you have a good time.

1. How long has the business been operating and how did it start?

M06144 was founded by UIAGM mountain guide Gottlieb Braun-Elwert and his wife, Anne, in 1981. Both were secondary school teachers at the time and tested the market by offering alpine ski touring holidays during their school holidays, then natural history walking tours throughout New Zealand during the summer months. High guiding followed with anything from climbing courses to guided ascents of Mt. Cook, once National Park concession permits were gained.

2. What is your company's mission?

We aim to give you: - One of your most memorable mountain holidays, - The satisfaction that comes from meeting new challenges and achieving new goals, - The stimulation that comes from new experiences and new friendships, - All the while keeping in tune with the natural environment and ensuring that those who come after us find it just as good or better than we found it. Our Values: - Safety - high professional standards - Service - conscientious attention to detail - Sustainability - minimal environmental impact - Spirit - our people are passionate and enthusiastic.

3. What does your company specialize in?

We specialize in Alpine Trekking, snowshoeing, backcountry skiing (alpine and nordic ski touring), mountaineering courses, guided ascents of New Zealand's highest mountains, hiking tours throughout New Zealand.

4. Who is the founder or owner of the company and briefly describe his/her past activities?

Gottlieb Braun-Elwert - founder. A former nuclear physicist, Gottlieb came to New Zealand in 1978 as an IFMGA qualified mountain and ski guide, with 46 years of mountaineering and 36 years of professional guiding experience. His most notable climbing achievements include: First ascent of entire Peuterey Ridge of Mont Blanc (1973), all New Zealand 3000m peaks during a single winter (1989), winter ascent of Cerro Fitz Roy (Supercanaleta 1993), three winter crossings of the Patagonian Ice Cap (1994, 1995, 1996), and many others. Gottlieb died suddenly on 14 August 2008 from a ruptured aorta while guiding a group including then Prime Minister Helen Clark. Anne supported Gottlieb in setting up M06144 in 1981 and was co-Director with Gottlieb until his untimely passing in 2008. She now continues to run the company, supported by a loyal team of guides and her family, drawing on the creative and technical talents of daughters Carla and Elke and son-in-law Keith.

5. What is your most popular travel package and why?

Our most popular package is The Ball Pass Crossing because it is more challenging than most other hikes in New Zealand and it takes you really close to Aoraki Mt Cook, New Zealand's highest mountain, with amazingly spectacular views. You stay two nights at the only private hut in Mount Cook National Park, vis a vis the mighty Caroline Face, New Zealand's highest ice face.

6. What is the best compliment you received from a client?

"One of the best outdoor excursions I've ever been on. Better than sex! (well, almost)." F.Blakiston, journalist. March 2000.

"Thank you so much for a fantastic trip - I loved every minute of it. I will definitely recommend you to my friends! The Ball Pass was definitely the ... view more highlight of my 3 week trip to NZ. In terms of what you did well: Excellent pre-trek information and ability to discuss requirements with knowledgeable staff. Organised and efficient. Andrew, the guide, was excellent - easy going, knowledgeable and inspired confidence. There wouldn't be too many people I would trust to lower me into a crevasse on a glacier! (optional). He was a great guide as well as a great cook. The trek itself was fantastic and I really enjoyed staying in the Caroline Hut - really cosy and comfortable with the most spectacular views. The day on the glacier was definitely one of the highlights and gave us a taste of some mountaineering skills."

"Just a quick note to say how much I enjoyed the Ball Pass crossing with your company. As I said in my Rankers comment – probably the best three day walk ... view more for me for all time. It was helped of course by the stunning weather we had and everything went exceptionally well. Thomas and Elke were excellent as guides and we felt they were more companions than guides which is a great way to be. It is my first guided trip ever and will probably not be my last."

For the three in our party, this was certainly the ... view more most challenging short trip we have undertaken (and we've walked the entire length of the Pyrenees Haute Route in summer).
