A big (2500 acres - 1000 hectares) historic (same family since 1853) working cattle ranch in South Texas, where the guest is a cowboy and works the ranch and cattle in the pasture and pens right along with us. If you don't want to work, don't sweat. We offer just rooms and riding. We also have hog, deer and dove hunting.
Southeast of San Antonio, Texas, in the old South Texas ranch country, the Lazy F Ranch is one of the oldest working cattle ranches in Texas. Located in Gonzales County, where first shot of the Texas Revolution was fired in the battle over the famous "Come and Take It" cannon and where the great cattle drives of the mid 1800's were started by my great-grandfather and his friends, Chisholm, Goodnight, and people you have never heard of. The ranch has been in Lieutenant Colonel Clay Allen's family for six generations (my daughter, Sydney, is #6) since 1853.
Cattle ranching is our first business. Guests, who come to help us on the ranch, are our second business. No structure or time schedule. Crisis (Chaos) management rules ... what needs to be fixed first is first.
Here's how it works, Pardner... you are a guest; you want to ride horses; I need a fence fixed; and now you have a choice. I put you on a horse; give you gloves and a fencing tool AND YOU RIDE TO FIX THE FENCE!! How about that choice??
No golf, No tennis, NO TV, no "line dancing" ... you want to do this stuff, go to town or a "dude" or "resort" ranch. One "dude" ranch advertises, "Our cowboys will wake you up with a steaming cup of coffee at your door." Hell will freeze over before I bring coffee to your room. What I might do, if you aren't up on time AND you haven't told me before hand it is your "day off", is just ride off and leave you OR shoot my .44 outside your window.. this is my kind of "cowboy wake-up". This is a big old CATTLE ranch .. ride, learn to rope, learn barrels and poles, learn to shoot, and see the local history... that is about it Pards.. you want to ride this is the place... no nags, no dead heads, no "nose to tail" .. these are working horses and I can teach you to ride if you have never been on a horse. |
