The company got off the ground in 1996 as a grouping of Americans and Brits living in Asia with a penchant for traveling deep into China's far-off south-west regions (in the bad old days of closed areas and police checkpoints!), who desired to form a travel company founded on their particular special interests in the area. After much prospecting, in 1997 we decided to set up base in Lijiang, Yunnan Province, so as to be more responsive to conditions on the ground, as we quickly realized that if we were going to be an organization known for its ability to access untrodden areas, then the front-line was the only place to be.
Since then the company has developed into the non-hierarchical cooperative effort that it is today. Comprising an inner core of four to five people, complemented by a wider circle of specialist guides and drivers whom we have worked with over the last 5 years, as well as a far-reaching network of contacts throughout the SW and Eastern Tibet area which keeps us informed of local conditions and changes, and provides local resources where needed.
Company Restructuring
As of Spring 2003 we've set up a new base in Zhongdian (now somewhat optimistically renamed Shangri-La). As Shangri-La is as we speak undergoing re-construction, such hi-tech notions such as phone lines are proving something of a conundrum! So if you've noticed delays in email replies and the recent website update then this is, in part, the reason. However, we hope that in the future the re-location will bring benefits for all concerned.
Along with the move to Zhongdian we have decided to close down the increasingly irrelevant UK Ltd end of the company. This will be replaced with a Zhongdian agency backed on the international side by a Hong Kong registered company. Since PRC regulations for the moment prohibit (except in the case of large multi-national foreign agencies) foreign-owned travel agencies, the Zhongdian agency will be legally owned by our Chinese staff, though in reality owned and run by the whole team. The Hong Kong company will be majority owned by our western staff, though we’ll be giving shares to the whole team. This arrangement will have two advantages; firstly, it more fairly reflects what has truly become a team operation between us ‘old outsides’ and the principle local drivers and guides; and secondly, in the future our customers will contract with the HK agency which in turn will contract the local agency thus making available domestic insurance packages for the trips, thus providing a little extra cover for everybody concerned.
In the distant future and if things continue the way they are, there are plans afoot to open up branch offices in the US, Canada, the UK & possibly Australia. |
