The Port Phillip Bay Environmental Study was funded by Melbourne Water and Melbourne Parks and Waterways and managed by CSIRO. Other government agencies involved in the study were the Environment Protection Authority, the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the Port of Melbourne Authority.
Scientists from 29 research institutions around Australia and overseas undertook more than 40 major research tasks as part of the Study. A number of advanced computer models were developed as part of the four year Study. The models will be used to predict the outcomes of different environmental inputs and factors. Several of the models, and other research tools, were specially designed for the Study. The cost of the four-year study was $12 million, a significant investment in the future of a priceless natural asset.
The ecology and health of the Bay - the range and abundance of plant and animal life and how species interact. The physical processes - how water and suspended matter move around the Bay and how seasonal and climatic changes impact on it.
In 1956 a rock structure was built for the Olympic Games in Port Phillip Bay, 4 km from the mouth of the Yarra River. Naturally adopted this has become the home for a thriving colony of Little (Fairy) Penguins - kept a secret until 1993 when Captain Noel Butcher (Port Phillip Bay Environment Study) established Penguin Waters Cruises and gained sole permission (Department of Natural Resources and Environment, City of Port Phillip) to show you this colony of Little Penguins up close. Penguin Waters sunset cruise departs daily from Southbank berth one (next to walkbridge) and Docklands shed 9.
