Best Months for Adventure Activities
Submitted by M05693 on 2007-06-20
To get the most out of your experience in the Canadian Rockies, the following suggests the best time to plan your vacation depending upon your preferred activities:
Hiking: Best in autumn (September and October), with
... view more gorgeous fall colors, wild cranberries for picking, no mosquitos.
Horseback riding: Best in the summer months (June, July and August).
Canoeing: Best in June and July; lower water levels in August and September.
Whitewater rafting: Best in June for thrilling whitewater due to high water levels.
Bird watching: Best from mid-May to mid-June, as this is the time that our migratory sondbirds come back and fill the forest with color and sound. Eagle migration along the Eastern Slopes begins mid-September and continues until the end of October.
Cross-country skiing: Best in February and March with longer daylight hours and less chance of severe cold front.
Snowshoeing: Best between December and April. Typically, we'll get sticking snow by the end of October and have good snow conditions until the middle of April.
