Cape Scott Provincial Park on Vancouver Island in BC. is considered one of Vancouver Islands’ best wilderness hikes. It is renowned for is incredible scenery, lush rain forests, numerous white sandy beaches, abundant wildlife,and rich history. This is our favorite trip; we cannot recommend it enough. The visual and emotional rewards, especially on a clear day, are beyond compare. Excellent trip for all levels of hikers.
Tour Itinerary: Day 1: You’ll be picked up in Victoria or Nanaimo and then we will drive north up Vancouver Island to Cape Scott. Once we arrive at the Cape Scott trailhead. There we will have a discussion on trail safety, emergency procedures, and the itinerary. Afterwards, we will walk 3 km to the first beach and wilderness campsite, San Josef Bay. Everyone will set up camp on the beach and dinner will be prepared. Includes: (D). Day 2: San Josef bay - Eric Lake. After a good night’s rest and filling breakfast we will set out to explore San Josef Bay. Sea stacks, small islands, caves, wooden ladders and Spectacular scenery are just a few things to be discovered. Next, we will walk to Eric Lake through old growth rainforest. This section has many boardwalks and provides a good opportunity to see the Quatsino rain forest. The campsite at Eric Lake is on boardwalks to protect the fragile surroundings. Especially impressive is the temperate rainforest surrounding the lake creating an unforgettable atmosphere. Includes: (B), (L), (D). Day 3: Eric Lake - Nisson Bight. This is a 12-km hike through beautiful rain forest with many amazing sights and interesting things to discover. Points of interest include a giant Sitka Spruce, old telegraph lines, Fisherman’s Creek with a picturesque bridge to cross. We will explore Donaldson Farm, with old relics, an open bog area, and miles of boardwalks. Remains of an old sailing ship, that was sunk to form a breakwater, can be seen at Nissen Bight. There is something new and exciting to see and discover at every turn on this truly amazing day. There are many spots along the way to stop and observe the wildlife that has made this amazing place their home. At Nissen Bight we will set up camp on the beach and spend the evening around a campfire discussing the antics of the day. Includes: (B), (L), (D). Day 4: Nissen Bight - Nels Bight. Hike to, and explore, the historic remains of the old Cape Scott settlement! Explore the remains of buildings, some still standing. Discover historical farming equipment from the early 20th Century, including a caterpillar tractor (the first motorised one of its kind) that was left behind. After spending time exploring and reflecting on the ordeals of the early settlers, we will move on to Nels Bight. There we will set up camp, relax, and explore the awesome surroundings. The beach at Nels Bight is the largest in the area. Bears, eagles, dear, and other wildlife are commonly observed on or around this beach. This hike is only 5km long, leaving enough time to explore and enjoy the beach. Includes: (B), (L), (D). Day 5: Lighthouse. On this spectacular day, you will leave your packs behind and enjoy some of the most impressive scenery that Cape Scott has to offer! First, we’ll go to the very beautiful Experiment Bight. The beach resembles those in the tropics. Next, we’ll explore Guise Bay. This beach has a very relaxing atmosphere, with old buildings, sand dunes, and signs of the native people that first inhabited the area. At the end of the beach, we can follow the remains of an old plank road to the lighthouse stopping on the way to view another two incredible beaches. Lots to see and do, and then head back to Nels Bight. We will spend the remainder of the day and evening relaxing at Nels Bight. Includes: (B), (L), (D). Day 6: Hike back out. Today, we will hike back to the parking lot at the trailhead. On the way, we will stop at the Christiansen Grave, spending time to reflect back on the incredible hardships and ordeals of the brave pioneers to visit this place, and to marvel at the awesome power of Cape Scott. An adventure you will never forget! From the trailhead, we will drive to Port Hardy, go to the hotel, freshen up and have dinner. Includes: (B), (L). Day 7: You will be driven back to your accommodation in Victoria or Naniamo. Notes:
