Your Itinerary

Day 1: Saturday

Arrival at the Airport in Whitehorse. You will be picked up by our van and we will make a short tour to show you the town of Whitehorse. Here you also have the chance to do some shopping. Afterwards we drive along the Alaska Highway through a frozen winter world until we reach, after 50 km, the base camp at Blue Kennels. You will move into your cozy cabin, light the stove and relax. The dogs will be waiting to meet you. You want to know what a bootie is? Well you learn it today. We show you how to harness the dogs, give you an instruction on how to drive the sled and equip you with your winter gear. Depending on the weather we hook up the dogs and go for a short first run. Three dogs will pull you on this first day. After taking care of the dogs we will enjoy a hearty meal. You might want to take a sauna or just relax on the couch beside the stove, and of course listen to the dogs howling outside. Included: (L), (D).

Day 2: Sunday

While the morning sun slowly lifts over the horizon we will prepare for our first daytrip after breakfast. We feed and water the dogs and harness them up at around 11 a. m. We will cover about 40 km in distance, mainly going along a flat training trail and over the frozen Takhini River. Just the slight sound of the working dogs and runners in the snow will be with us for that day. You will get to know your dogs and start to form a personal relationship. With every stop, and praise for the dogs, they learn to trust you and you to trust them. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 3: Monday

Today we load our sled with some gear and head towards beautiful Kusawa Lake. This used to be an old trading route of the Champagne Aishihik First Nations. We easily cover between 40 and 60 km. Slowly a new feeling of life will creep in. In harmony with the running rhythm of your team you will enjoy nature in a way never experienced before. The evening we spend again in our cozy log cabins. Time for a bush-shower? Enjoy and relax in our sauna. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 4: Tuesday

For three days you will leave behind the last remnants of civilization and head out for an unforgettable adventure. Your team of Huskies will pull you and your loaded sled to remote 37 Mile Lake, along the Yukon Quest Trail, the toughest Sled Dog Race in the World. Driving across unnamed lakes we will reach our preset wall tent camp. Everything we need will be packed with us on the sled. We go out to cut some firewood, cook together on the woodstove and share stories. If the group decides, we might even take a few of our new four legged friends in the tent. We have a great chance to meet Elk or Caribou. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 5: Wednesday

From Camp we start a daytrip further down the Quest trail. If the weather allows there is a possible ascent to the Sifton Range. This offers stunning views in all directions. Aishihik Lake to the west, Whitehorse to the east, Braeburn to the north and the impressive Costal range to the south. The evening we spend in our trappers tent, where warm tea or soup will be waiting on the stove. In this surrounding the meaning of freedom will get a new dimension. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 6: Thursday

Today we will head to 57Mile Lake, a high mountainous lake. We visit Annie Neds cabin, drive through high alpine landscape with its very own charm. Your driving skills will be tested, as a few trails demand your attention. The evening is spending in our wall tent again, or if you wish we can head for the base camp again with the log cabin and sauna waiting. By now you and your team will travel in harmony. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 7: Friday

After a mushers breakfast we head back to the Blue Kennels base camp. In the afternoon we drive with our truck to Haines Junction a 1.5 hr drive. Here we move in our second base camp and spend the first night in a hotel with a hot shower and a bar, the Bear Creek Den. Included: (B), (L).

Day 8: Saturday

On new trails we explore the area of Haines Junction. A nice trail leads us to Pine Lake. We always have a view of the majestic Kluane Mountains towering over Haines Junction. The night we spend in our cabins at the base camp. Included: (L), (D).

Day 9: Sunday

Today we travel towards Aishihik. The trail gradually climbs above the tree line, where we will take our lunch break. Often moose are viewed in this area. The trip home is quick, as it is mostly downhill back to the base camp. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 10: Monday

After the morning chorus we hook up our teams and head towards “Little Otis Lake” near the Bear Creek Summit. A narrow winding trail leads towards this small untouched wilderness lake. After returning back to the base camp it is time for our 11 day guests to say good bye to their new four legged friends. (Transfer to Whitehorse and night in Hotel). Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 11: Tuesday

Along the pipeline trail and over Bear Summit we travel towards Silver City. The Sleds are loaded with our supplies again. We rest in a heated trappers tent again. This route is also traveled each March by the racers of the Silver Sled Dog Race. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 12: Wednesday

After 2 days we reach Silver City, where we stay in cozy cabins with Kluane Lake view. The trail passes several old silver mining sites. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 13: Thursday

On the way home we overnight in the wall tent again. The dogs travel fast as the sled is light. We left supplies here for our return trip. Time to explore Kloo Lake. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 14: Friday

About noon we return to the base camp. Unfortunately it is time to say good bye to your four legged friends. Transfer to Whitehorse and night in downtown Hotel. Included: (B), (L),

Day 15: Saturday

After breakfast the hotel van will bring you to the airport for your southbound flight…or better yet, to complete your Yukon winter experience, by joining another tour offered.

Notes:
Airfare is not included in the tour price.

The Tour can be changed, so that the first week is in Haines Junction and the second week in Whitehorse, or also our third base camp in Dezadeash might be used. All guests are actively involved in the camp and bush routines, like daily taking care of the dogs and cutting firewood at the tent camps.
