Situated approximately 240 kilometres north of Tongatapu, the Vava'u Island Group is a smattering of 50-odd islands, in an area 23 by 25 kilometres, protected by a semi-circular reef. The islands are separated by reefs or open water, but are not great paddling distances apart.

In his book, "The Happy Isles of Oceania: Paddling the Pacific", author Paul Theroux describes sea kayaking in Vava’u thus: "It was a perfect area for paddling a kayak - perhaps the best in the Pacific. There was a surfy side and a safe side to each island - the lee shores usually had the beaches - all were secluded, all were lovely."

Sample Tour Itinerary

Option 1: Paddle into renowned Swallows Cave. Picnic lunch on Mala, which was once the home of a cannibal demi-god that liked nothing better than to catch and eat paddlers passing in outrigger canoes! From Mala's beach we can safely snorkel to the entrancing Japanese Gardens (magnificent sample of live coral and colorful reef fish).

Option 2: Snorkel "The Wall" off A'a Island - one of the most popular dive spots followed by lunch at Falevai/ Kapa Island - a peninsula perfect for a picnic and snorkelling. Owing to a slight current the channel teems with reef fish. It has a beautiful outlook facing the outer islands.

Quality single and double sea kayaks are also available to freedom paddlers for exploring the Port of Refuge (Harbor) & Japanese Gardens (Kapa Island). Full safety gear and briefing provided.

Notes:
Airfare is not included in the tour price.

Tour itinerary is subject to change depending on weather and sea conditions. Lunch is not included in the cost of the tour. A picnic lunch can be arranged for an additional NZD$22 per person.

Sea kayak rental only (non-guided): $35 full day or $20 half day.
