Playfully orchestrated "Family Magic®" is rafting adventures on the last 60 miles of the Salmon River are enchanting family whitewater rafting trips that blend hot sun, warm water, fun rapids and the most beautiful white sand beaches of any river in the West. From our put-in near Whitebird, Idaho, this river rafting adventure takes you through twisted volcanic canyons that open up to vast mountains soaring into an endless western sky. As cliffs and boulders constrict the river, raft-tossing rapids quench your thirst for white water excitement. Between the rapids we relax, drift and enjoy the mountain vistas and soaring eagles. Along the way we beach our boats to take short hikes to historic sites of the Nez Perce Indians, as well as 19th century Chinese miners. Camping conditions are ideal. From the soft white sand you can wade into clear swimming pool-like water. Or join in a game of volleyball, do a little fishing, throw a frisbee or simply catch some sun.
Your Itinerary Day 1: The evening before Day 1, travel from your home to Clarkston, Washington (across the Snake River from Lewiston, Idaho) and meet Team Leader and our River Jester at the Quality Inn at 7:00 pm Pacific Time for a one hour orientation meeting to answer any last-minute questions and give you your waterproof bags to pack. Depart at 7:30 am in our bus for a two-hour ride to the rafting trip launch point near Whitebird, Idaho. Along the way we stop for a brief visit at the Nez Perce National Historical Park for our first introduction to the people who lived along the Salmon River for thousands of years. Once at the river our staff prepares you with a thorough safety orientation while your personal gear is loaded onto our rafts. We launch on the river and enjoy rafting a few miles before stopping for a delicious riverside lunch. Altogether we travel between 6 and 12 miles the first day. Around 4:00 pm we arrive at camp. After you carry your personal gear to the tent of your choice, enjoy free time for swimming, hiking, fishing, reading or just relaxing. "River Jester®" will have fun activities planned for the younger set. Hors d’oeuvres are served around 6:00 along with the kids’ dinner. The adult dinner is served around 7:30 and kids are welcome to join this too. After dinner a campfire is lit and an evening of laughter and sharing begins. Included: (L), (D). Day 2: We wake you around 7:00 am with the smell of fresh-brewed coffee. Breakfast is served around 7:30 and while we clean up the kitchen you pack up your personal gear. The rafts are loaded and we depart from camp about 9:30 for an adventure-packed day of family white water rafting with rapids, great Western scenery and fun. Of historic interest, we stop and visit an Indian rock art site, left by the original inhabitants of this rugged land. Then we enter “Green Canyon” and the exciting rapids of Wright Way Drop and Demon’s Drop. Soon after we lunch on a big beach, perfect for swimming and beach games. The afternoon has a few more rapids, the chance of seeing soaring eagles and peaceful time drifting along. Camp is set on a huge white sand beach. After dinner and the evening campfire, watch for a glorious star-studded sky. Included: (B), (L), (D). Day 3: Today your rafting holiday takes you through “Cougar Canyon” and “Snowhole Canyon” for full day of whitewater rafting fun. Big, splashy rapids such as Lorna’s Lulu, Bunghole, the Gobbler, Bodacious Bounce, Snowhole and China make for great stories and beaming smiles. Learn about the Chinese miners who lived and worked in these canyons in the latter half of the 1800’s and visit one of their camps and rock houses. It’s usually hot (85-95 degrees), so the warm 68-70 degree water invites frequent swims. Our guides have a bagful of games and fun for kids and adults alike and at camp we may set up a volleyball net, horseshoes or take a hike up a mountain. Included: (B), (L), (D). Day 4: More fun rapids and incredible scenery. We may see some playful river otter swimming and frolicking. At Cottonwood Creek the more adventuresome may jump in and swim through a rapid! Those fishing will continue to find bass and trout and birdwatchers are likely to spot golden eagles and falcons. After lunch we enter “Blue Canyon” and a long series of cascading rapids including the Devil’s Slide, Sluice Box, Checkerboard and Eye of the Needle. We end the day near the confluence with the Snake River. Included: (B), (L), (D). Day 5: Once we enter the Snake we’re floating on double the volume of water compared to just the Salmon alone. There are some big waves and big rides and also some long stretches of flat water. We join the rafts together and using a small, quiet outboard, motor through some of today’s river miles. Another fine lunch on a sandy beach and a big smile for the group photo. Around 3:00 pm we reach our take-out just below the confluence with the Grande Ronde River and carry personal gear to the waiting bus. Then it’s a quick 45-minute ride back to the warehouse and motel. Enjoy a hot shower and change of cloths and then meet your guides for hosted dinner at a local restaurant around 7:00 pm.
