Game drives, hikes, motorboat cruises and mokoro tours in Botswana, Namibia and Zambia. This value-priced camping adventure has it all: the Okavango Delta, Moremi and Chobe National Parks, Savuti, Tsodilo Hills World Heritage Site plus Namibia's utterly wild Caprivi game reserves and awesome Victoria Falls in Zambia.
Activities: hiking, camping, game drives, boat cruises, mokoro tours, optional tour of Victoria Falls, optional scenic flight to Maun, other optional activities in Victoria Falls (rafting, canoeing, bungee jumping, etc.) Inn & Camping Highlights: This tour is a "participation" camping safari using developed, bush and wild camps. Most nights offer "bush showers and toilets". The final night is at the Zambezi Waterfront lodge, located just 2.5 miles upstream from magnificant Victoria Falls. Your Itinerary Day 1: Chobe National Park, Botswana We drive to our first camp on the tranquil Chobe River, where an evening boat cruise reveals grunting hippos, basking crocs, bathing elephants and a glorious African sunset. (D). Days 2-4: Caprivi Game Reserves, Namibia Home to elephants, lions, buffaloes, giraffes, crocodiles and hippos, the Caprivi Strip also features more than 400 species of birds. We tour the river channels, reedy islands and lush wetlands of Mamili National Park and then enjoy the 200-foot sand dunes of Mudumo National Park. Our last camp is near Popa Falls on the mighty Okavango River and the birding is exceptional. (B/L/D). Day 5: Tsodilo Hills, Botswana. Mahango National Park has enormous baobab trees, verdant flood plains and large herds of elephant, buffalo and red lechwe. We next tour the Tsodilo Hills, the "Louvre of the Kalahari", with Bushman guides and view some of the 4,500 rock paintings which date back more than a thousand years. (B/L/D). Days 6-8: Okavango Delta, Botswana A boat cruise through the papyrus-lined channels of the Okavango Delta delivers us to our waiting mokoros, native dugout canoes, from which we explore the delta's watery vastness for the next three days. The Okavango is the world's largest inland delta, flooding 5,800 square miles of the Kalahari Desert and creating a luxuriant maze of lagoons and channels. Two nights of island camping provide opportunities to spot many of the 350 species of birds and the rare sitatunga, an antelope with splayed hooves specially adapted for life in the swamps. (B/L/D). Days 9-11: Moremi Game Reserve, Botswana This area's woodlands, flood plains and marshes provide a rich living for large groups of lion, elephant, leopard, hyena, wild dog, eland, kudu, roan antelope, giraffe, zebra, impala, buffalo, hippo and crocodile. The days are spent searching for wildlife and absorbing the sights, sounds and beauty of the bush. (B/L/D). Days 12-13: Chobe National Park, Botswana The Park's 4000 square miles of primal Africa are home to the world's largest elephant population, currently extimated at 120,000. We begin with an exploration of the Savuti region, often described as the single best wildlife viewing area in Africa today. Add sable, wildebeest, waterbuck and warthog to your lengthening list of sightings. Then it's north to the Chobe River, with bands of elephants of 100 or more. (B/L/D). Days 14-15: Victoria Falls, Zambia Our final full day of the tour is one with nearly infinite options. Consider whitewater rafting through Batoka Gorge below thundering Victora Falls. Or explore the falls, a mile wide and 300-feet high, from footpaths and viewpoints, opt for a bungee jump, tour a museum or take an elephant ride. (B/L). Notes: Cost: $2499 for the July 1 - October 21 departures; $2299 for March 11 - June 17 and November 4 and 18 departures. Single supplement: $150 (camps and lodge).
