Hike, bike, kayak and explore archeological sites in the cradle of Mayan civilization. This exhilarating itinerary takes you to the country's highlights plus off-the-beaten path destinations to explore Guatemala like few will! Climb an active volcano, bike through spectacular scenery on local trade routes, kayak on renowned Lake Atitlan, see the spectacular ruins of Tikal and visit colorful local markets.
Your Itinerary Days 1-2: Antigua - Pacaya National Park We transfer from the airport in Guatemala City to the former colonial capital and World Heritage Site of Antigua for a stroll through its cobblestone streets. Hike to the top of Pacaya Volcano, peer down at the lava in the crater and enjoy spectacular views to the coast. (D). Days 3-4: Alaska - Totonicapan - Zunil Ridge Bike through some of the country's most spectacular scenery in the highlands along local paths and spend the night in the home of a local Mayan family. Hike to stunning views of ten volcanoes and maybe spot the national bird, the colorful Resplendant Quetzal. (B/L/D). Day 5: Almolonga - Cerro Quemado - Lake Atitlan Visit the area's most important vegetable market, hike up Burnt Peak and bike down through Mayan villages to the shores of stunning Lake Atitlan. (B/L/D). Day 6: Lake Atitlan - Cerro de Oro Kayak on what many consider to be the most beautiful lake in the world. Pass local fishermen, indigenous Mayan women doing their chores and men working the fields in their embroidered Santiago shorts. Then it's off to a hike up impressive Cerro de Oro followed by a village visit. (B/L/D). Day 7: Lake Atitlan - Lake Peten Itza We enjoy one final hike to a spectacular lookout above the lake and then transfer back to Guatemala City for our flight to the northern rainforest in Peten. (B/L/D). Days 8-9: Tikal - Guatemala City A guided tour of this mystical Mayan site in the jungle is a must for any visit to Guatemala! Watch for howler and spider monkeys and coatimundis as you wander the extensive grounds amid the various temples. An afternoon flight returns us to Guatemala City for a free evening to enjoy the nightlife before being transfered the following morning to the airport for your flight home. (B/L/D). Trip Extensions: Extend your stay by choosing some beach time and the turquoise Caribbean waters of Belize's Amerbergris Caye, an excursion to the Copan ruins in neighboring Honduras, or more of Guatemala's archaeological sites.
