Day 1 - National Capital - Canberra
Today you start a truly magnificent soft adventure journey that visits both the stunning Capital of Australia - Canberra and the largest National Park system in Australia featuring some of the most spectacular and remote regions this country offers. All in the hands of your friendly (Canberra-based) guide.
Departing Sydney we make our way down the Hume Highway to Canberra spending the afternoon on a flexible itinerary exploring the capital possibly including Mt Ainslie lookout, Parliament House, Australian War Memorial, Embassy district, Regatta Point Planning Exhibition, Carillon and National Museum. Overnight “Avalanche Homestead” farmstay (private facilities). (L,D).
Day 2 - Snowy Mountains & River Murray
After breakfast we make our way to Jindabyne in the Snowy Mountains. From here we head into Kosciuszko National Park up past Australia’s largest mountain, Mt Kosciuszko. Crossing Dead Horse Gap we start winding our way down through beautiful sub-alpine tall eucalypt forests and onto the upper reaches of the Murray River, Australia’s longest river with its source high in the Snowy Mountains.
Stopping as often as you like you’ll discover places like Dead Horse Gap, Pilot Wilderness area, Tom Groggin and Geehi. We’ll wind our way along the River Murray valley towards the little town Khancoban where we’ll stop for the night at friendly B&B. Dinner tonight will be in a restaurant in the town of Khancoban. Overnight “Cossettini’s’ B&B (Private room with Shared Facilities). (B,L,D).
Day 3 - Snowy River National Park & McKillops Bridge
Following a hearty breakfast we make our way down towards McKillops Bridge, one of the few bridges crossing the remote Snowy River. Admiring the Snowy River N.P. scenery along the way we'll also stop to explore the Little River Gorge and/or stroll to the waterfalls cascading off the Gelatipy Plateau. A visit to McKillops Bridge really does enforce the power that once flowed in the Snowy River. From here we travel through the Alpine N.P. in the shadow of the famous Cobberas twin-mountains and onto the little towns of Benambra and Omeo. Overnight: Mt Buffalo Chalet. (B,L,D).
Day 4 - Bogong High Plains & onto Melbourne
Spend the morning exploring other parts of the Dinner Plain - Bogong High Plains area perhaps including a morning horseback trek (own cost) with campfire breakfast, native forest bush walk, little towns of Mt Hotham, Harrietville, Bright, farming communities or the nearby ski fields. Making our way out of the mountains and onto Melbourne in the afternoon. Finish Melbourne: approx. 6:30pm (B,L).
