Day 1 - San José:
Welcome! Upon your arrival at San José International Airport our Spanish-speaking driver will be waiting to escort you to your hotel and to hand out your travel information. Economy: Overnight stay at Don Carlos / Deluxe: Overnight stay at Grano de Oro.
Day 2 - Poás Volcano - Arenal Volcano:
In the morning, delivery of your 4x4 rental car directly to your hotel. Drive through the Northern Mountains to Arenal Volcano. Optional: Visit Poás Volcano on your way (entrance fee approx. US$ 7 p.p. + parking fee). Early morning offers the best chance for a clear, cloudless view of the 14,000-acre nature reserve of Poás Volcano. So you should be off to a very early start by car from San José. The active crater with temperatures between 104° F and 158° F is located in the center of the park; the poisonous sulfur fumes do not allow any life near by but make Poás - because of the gas process - the world's second biggest geyser. Continue your drive passing Catarata La Paz, Costa Rica's most impressive waterfall, cascading down the east slope of Poás Volcano. You might stop at an amazing hummingbird gallery before continuing your trip to La Fortuna and the Arenal Volcano. Optional (not included in the Economy Version / included in the Deluxe Version): In the evening at the hot springs of Tabacon, you may want to relax in a warm soothing bath of waterfalls and natural pools against the backdrop of fresh nighttime air and a starry sky. Keep a lookout in case that sky explodes with hot showers of red, yellow and orange, the sparkling lava flows of Arenal Volcano. Economy: Overnight stay at Volcano Lodge / Deluxe: Tabacón Resort.
Day 3 - Arenal Volcano - Monteverde Cloud Forest:
The morning is at your disposal for optional activities around Arenal Volcano. Around noon time, drive around Arenal Lake to Cañas, then south on the Pan American Highway toward Sta. Elena in the Monteverde Cloud Forest region. The last 35 km of this journey takes you up into the mountains, over a winding gravel road. Economy: ON Cloud Forest Lodge / Deluxe: Fonda Vela.
Day 4 - Monteverde Cloud Forest:
Day at your disposal for optional activities (not included): Your first adventure might be an early morning walk through the Sta. Elena Nature Reserve, the best time to immerse in the sights and sounds of the jungle’s inhabitants greeting the new day. At the entrance of the reserve you will be surrounded by hummingbirds, their wings fluttering, bodies darting and seemingly suspended in midair, luminous and all sizes. In the afternoon, you may want to go for a "walk in the clouds" (optional). Start with your feet on the ground, hiking through lush forest toward the “Walkways" of Selvatura - suspended bridges, platforms and trails elevated deep within the canopy of the cloud forest. From here you are allowed a gentle, rare glimpse through the tops of giant trees into the nether regions of this hidden world that would otherwise remain a mystery to most of us. There are numerous other optional activities that you might want to enjoy during the remainder of your afternoon, including a visit to the Frog Pond, the Snake Farm, or the Orchid Garden. Economy: ON Cloud Forest Lodge / Deluxe: Fonda Vela.
Day 5 - Monteverde - Manuel Antonio:
After breakfast, drive back onto the Pan American Highway and ride down south along the Pacific coastline towards the town of Jacó. You may make a stop at the Rios Tarcoles Bridge where large crocodiles can often be seen basking on the banks of the river. If you wish, you might also visit Carara National Park, one of the main nesting sites of the Scarlet Macaw. (Optional, with an entrance fee of approximately US $ 8 p.p). Continue your drive further south to Manuel Antonio for an afternoon check-in at your hotel. Economy: Overnight stay at Hotel Playa Espadilla / Deluxe: Costa Verde.
Day 6 - Manuel Antonio National Park & Beaches:
Day at your disposal in Manual Antonio. Optional: Visit Manuel Antonio Nationalpark (entrance fee not included): Are you ready for capuchin monkeys, sloth, iguanas, anteaters, and multiple species of birds, all within easy walking distance into the rainforest? A hike of about 1.5 hours on the park’s trails will get you this and more, including fantastic beaches within the park, where you are free to soak up some sun or bathe in the refreshing Pacific Ocean. Economy: Overnight stay at Hotel Playa Espadilla / Deluxe: Costa Verde.
Day 7 - Manuel Antonio - San José:
In the morning, you may still enjoy the fantastic beaches of Manuel Antonio, then drive back to San Jose. Once in San José, the remainder of the day is yours to do as you wish. You might visit one of the various galleries or museums (optional - entrance fees not included) or just go shopping for some souvenirs. Economy: Overnight stay at Don Carlos / Deluxe: Overnight stay at Grano de Oro.
