Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Kathmandu - Zangmu (2500m, 116 km). Depart Kathmandu at 6 am. Drive to Kodari boarder-friendship bridge. Normally it is 5 hours drive. Hike up hill to the Immigration check in post. It is about 2 hours walk (11km). There is a rough gravel road to the post which may not be motorable during monsoon seasons. Day 2: Zangmu - Xegar (4350m, 244 km). Leave hotel around 8 am. The road slowly wind up to the plateau. En route cross Nyalamu (3800m) and Lalung–la (pass). After crossing the pass at 5050m you have great view of the entire Himalayan range. Travel further on the dirt road to Xegar. Day 3: Xegar - Xigaze (3900m, 244 km). Continue the drive, cross a pass (5220m) and arrive at Xigaze. Stay overnight at Xigaze. First part of the drive across the plain provides panoramic view of Mt.Everst, Cho-Oyu, Makalu and other lofty peaks jutting out of the skyline toward the blue sky. This is a day for photography. At Xigaze visit Tashilhunpo monastery. It was founded by first Dalai Lama in 1447 in honor of his teacher Kadrub. Gendun Zhuba was the first abbot of the monastery, and in 1600 at the invitation of the monastery the 4th Panchen Lama became its 16th abbot making the monastery the official abode of the Panchen Lama. He is second in rank to Dalai Lama. Visit the monastery can be done next day before heading to Gyantse. Day 4: Xigaze - Gyantse (3950m, 90 km). Drive to Gyantse. The golden Pagoda or Palgor Chorten at Gyantse is one of the most famous monuments in Tibet. It was built in 15th century for worship only. No monks live in it. The top of the Pagoda is made of copper heavily gilded with gold. Day 5: Gyantse - Lhasa (3650m, 261 km). It is long and interesting drive. You visit Yamdrok lake. It is situated west of Lhasa over the 479m Kamba-la (pass). It is known to Tibetan as the “Turquoise Lake”. The road to the pass skirts the edge of the lake and gradually winds up to the pass and to Lhasa. It is bluish green color certainly make this big lake an interesting site. You will be passing through several valley and high pass today. Day 6: In Lhasa (3650m). Sightseeing place includes Potala Palace (seat of Dalai Lama), Jhokang temple and Barkhuo bazaar around it and Norbulinka park. The park covered 360,000 square meter, it is used to be summer place of all Dalai Lama after the 7th Dalai Lama. The park was extended by the 13th Dalai Lama Tudeng Jiacuao (1876-1933). The new palace was built in 1954 by the 14th Dalai Lama, Denzengf Jiacuo. Day 7: In Lhasa (3650m). Other interesting sightseeing places includes. Drepung and Sera Monastery. Day 8: Fly to Kathmandu or fly onward. Transfer to Gonggar airport 96 KM. Flight schedule departure time is 10 am (Beijing time). Arrive Kathmandu at 9am local time.
