Founded by Julius Caesar in 50 b.C., Cividale is truly an enchanting little gem in the region's eastern foothills, known for its famous Devil's Bridge, mysterious Celtic Hypogeum, ancient Lombard Temple as well as its lively atmosphere that you can breathe strolling around the narrow cobble stone streets leading to the enchanting Main Square. Cividale is also the capital of the Colli Orientali wine district, and therefore well known for its top wines, great food (Gubana is a delicious local specialty, a type of strudel with apples, pine seeds, raisins and grappa) and close position to the finest wine cellars of the region!
You'll cook with Rosina and/or Rita, two delightful ladies and excellent home cooks that will teach you how to prepare typical Italian and Friulian recipes. All classes, limited to 8-10 participants, are hands-on and last approximately 3 hours, followed by lunch or dinner. Meals feature foods prepared during class and consist of three/four courses accompanied by local wines. Following the true Italian way of eating, all meals are prepared using fresh ingredients and what is available in season. Tour Itinerary: Day 1: Arrival at Udine train station. Transfer to your B&B by private vehicle. Check-in and free time to explore the surroundings before your cooking lesson # 1 followed by dinner of your creations. Day 2: Breakfast. Morning: Cooking class # 2 on 3-4 different recipes followed by lunch. Afternoon: Guided visit of your host town, Cividale. We shall be glad to offer assistance in suggesting things to do, and places to visit. Day 4: Breakfast. Morning: Cooking lesson # 3 on 3-4 different recipes followed by lunch of your efforts. Afternoon: Departure to Aquileia for a guided visit of this Roman jewel, the most important archaeological site in northern Italy. You'll see the forum, remains of public baths and private houses, Roman roads with visible chariot tracks and the ancient Basilica which hosts stunning Byzantine frescoes and one of the largest and most spectacular early-Christian mosaic floors of Western Europe! Return to your accommodation in the late afternoon. Dinner at a local restaurant. Day 5: Breakfast. Morning: Visit to the local market (Saturdays only) followed by your cooking lesson # 4. Preparation of 3-4 different recipes followed by lunch of your creations. Afternoon: guided visit of Udine, an enchanting city in the heart of Friuli with a distinctive Venetian flavor. Its beautiful castle located on a hilltop offers wonderful views over the town and the unique countryside with the gorgeous Alps on the background. Return to your accommodation in the late afternoon.
