Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Upon arrival at the airport we will be welcomed by our guide. He will bring us to our comfortable, centrally located hotel. In the afternoon we will stroll around Ulaanbaatar. We will visit the Natural and the Historical Museums. We will stop at the Gandantegchinlen Monastery. It is the largest and most important monastery of Mongolia. We will scroll through the different monasteries and see the magnificent statue of Migjid Janraisig, an 82-food high statue gilded in gold and covered with silk cloths. We will have dinner at a local restaurant. Includes: (L), (D).

Day 2: In the morning we leave for Khustai Nuruu National Park located about 100 km southwest from Ulaanbaatar. It was established in 1993 and protects today the Takhi, the Mongolian's wild horses, also known as the Przewalski horses. After lunch we will hike in the area and see the wild horses. Overnight in a tented camp. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 3: After breakfast we will head for Kharkhorin (also called Karakorum), site of the 13th century capital of the Mongolian Empire created by Chinggis Khaan. Very little is left from this legendary city. In the 16th century, Mongolia's biggest Monastery was build from the ruins of Kharkhorin. Now Erdene Zuu Monastery are the remains of what once was a huge monastery of 100 temples and about 1.000 lamas residencing there. We will explore the grounds of Erdene Zuu Monastery surrounded by its massive 400 m X 400 m walls. We will be guided around the 3 remaining temples: Dalai Lama, Zuu of Buddha and Lavrin Temple. We will also see the Turtle Rock and the Phallic Rock. Overnight in a tented camp along the Orkhon River. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 4: We will leave Kharkhorin behind us and drive up the valley along the Orkhon River. In the late morning we will reach a green, with forest covered mountainous area. Here we will leave our jeeps and hike until the Orkhon Waterfalls. At the end of the day we will meet our vehicles that will bring us to Khorgo Khurem where we will spend the night in tents. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 5: Today we will have a full day trekking in the valley of the Eight Lakes. This totally remote region was created by volcanic activities. It is locked between several extinct volcanoes and high mountain peaks. As it name says, the valley shelters a large number of small lakes, all interconnected by rivers. The lakes are supplied with fresh water running from the mountains. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 6: Today we will set off for a three-day trek in the mountainous area of the Khangai. Here we will leave our vehicles and load our gear and food on pack horses. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 11: Today we will get up early for our longest driving day. We will drive some four hundred kilometres more westwards leaving the Khangai Mountains behind us. We will drive on Mongolia's worst roads to enter, one of Mongolia's least visited regions, the Great Lakes Depressions which stretch out from Uvs to Khovd aimag over about 40.000 square kilometres. The Great lake depression is a semi-arid desert region delimited westward by the Altai Mountain Range. In spring, melting snow from the Altai Mountain ends up in the depression's lakes. Being deprived of outlets to the sea, those salt lakes become giant evaporating points. End of the day we will pass Altai, capital city of Altai province to reach in the evening Khunkher Resort where we will spend the night. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Days 12 - 14: After breakfast we will pack the horses and leave our vehicles behind. We will depart for a four-day trek in the semi-arid desert region of Western Mongolia. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 15: More trekking, we will reach Khokh Pass. In the evening we will meet our vehicle. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 16: Today we will set off for Ereen Lake. It is a beautiful little fresh water desert lake at the food of Mongol Els sand dune, Mongolia's biggest and highest sand dunes. The lake is supplied with fresh water that flows in from the Khangai Mountains. Downstream the water flows into the large Khar Us Nuur salty desert lake where the water evaporates. We will spend the day relaxing along the lake's shores. Some will swimming and the most courageous will climb the sand dune to enjoy the breathtaking view over the Mongolian desert. We will set up our tented camp along the lake. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 18: One more day desert trekking. In the evening we will meet our vehicles. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 19: Today we will drive three hundred kilometres back eastwards in the direction of the Khangai Mountain. At the end of the afternoon we will reach a valley that will lead us to Otgondelger Mountain. This mountain with its peak that rises at 4.020 meters altitude is the highest mountain of the Khangai range and Mongolia's 5th highest mountain. We will overnight at the food of this giant. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 20: After the heat of the desert we will enjoy the freshness of the humid mountain valleys. We will take one day of rest. Some will swim; others will visit a Mongolian family and those who are still in hiking condition will make a walk in the region. In the evening we will set up our tents somewhere in the open valley, close to a nomad family. We will experience the warm hospitality offered by the Mongolian families. For dinner we will be offered a typical Mongolian barbeque that will be prepared by nomads. Those who want will have the opportunity to try the "airag" or fermented horse milk. Our guide - translator will help us to forge contact with the local population. Tonight we will share the gers with the family. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
