Most of the dives will take place on the Aliwal Shoal, which was recently voted by an international dive magazine as one of the top ten dive sites in the world. The reef has many steep drop offs, caverns and pinnacles.
* Depths range from 30m / 100ft to 5m / 15ft.
* Average visibility ranges from 10m / 30ft to 20m / 70ft.
* Water temperatures range from 27'C / 80'F in summer to 19'C / 70'F in winter.
A major attraction of the Aliwal Shoal is its diversity of marine life. The Shoal is host to a prolific amount of tropical reef fish and invertebrate life. "Big attractions" to the reef include dolphin, giant sting-rays, eagle and manta rays, turtle, huge potato bass and shark. With the Aliwal Shoal being situated so far offshore, the chance of seeing large schools of pelagic fish is good.
From late May to August humpback whales are regularly seen on the surface. During the late summer months (February to April) Whale Sharks can occasionally be seen. From July to November, the Ragged Tooth (Grey Nurse) Shark congregate in large numbers during their annual migration up the eastern coastline of South Africa.
It is almost guaranteed that divers will see Ragged Tooth Shark on their dives. It is not uncommon to see groups of 20 or more sharks at a time. Although aggressive looking, this is by nature a docile shark and poses no threat to considerate divers.
Other attractions of this area are two very popular ship wrecks, the Produce and the Nebo.
