The Jarbidge-Bruneau Rivers has some of the best class V whitewater that Idaho has to offer. They are located in the remote and beautiful high deserts of southwestern Idaho. The Jarbidge River is a challenge to the skills of any boatman. It’s narrow, full of rocks, and with a gradient of 50ft/mile, it really moves along. We use 12' oar boats with one guide and one guest to navigate the class III to V whitewater. You won't find a guide to guest ratio like this anywhere else, and the trip is limited to 6 guests. There is also some great hiking on the Jarbidge. We visit a natural arch, hike up to the canyon rim to look for bighorn sheep, or lie down by the cliff edge and watch the swallows and swifts fly over our heads.
Bruneau River. When we reach the confluence with the Bruneau on the third day we may have those running only the Bruneau join the trip, and we get a chance to soak in the natural hot springs there! The Bruneau canyon may be the prettiest of all the desert rivers. Its sheer walls shade the river corridor and create a lush oasis in the midst of the rock and sagebrush. Junipers line the river and many species of birds inhabit this section of canyon. We'll also have some great class III to IV rapids, with Five-mile Rapid providing the rollicking finale on the last day. Tour Itinerary: Day 1: Arrive in Boise the day before the trip. In the evening, we’ll get together to hand out gear and answer any last minute questions. Drive to the river the next morning. Soak in the hot springs, eat lunch, and then put on the river. Days 2-4 are the same as days 4-6 of the Jarbidge/Bruneau trip. Day 2: We’ll get an early start for our drive to the river. When we push off, we'll immediately be in the midst of swift rapids. An exciting day! Day 3: More good rapids and some excellent hiking available. Narrow chutes between large boulders define the larger rapids. Day 4: In the morning we reach Jarbidge Falls. We may have to line or portage this rapid. We’ll reach the confluence with the Bruneau around lunchtime and soak in the natural hot springs. Those rafting only the Bruneau will join the trip here. Days 5 & 6: We are on the Bruneau now, floating through some of the prettiest canyons anywhere. There will be some good class III rapids and lots of opportunities for hiking. Day 7: Run Five Mile Rapid in the morning, 3 1/2 miles of great class III-V whitewater. We’ll eat lunch along the river and have a mellow float to our takeout in mid-afternoon. Drive back to Boise.
