Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrive in the colonial port city of Veracruz. You will be met by Anna and the friendly, highly experienced staff of Esprit Rafting. We’ll stay overnight at the Hotel Imperial, one of the oldest hotels in Veracruz, situated right in the heart of the Zocalo. Day 2: After breakfast we’ll head out of town through the foothills of the enchanting Sierra Madre Orientales, to the village of Jalcomulco. This small village, situated in the heart of the Antigua river valley, has lots of local flavor to share! We’ll get everyone settled at Aventuras Sin Limites, a local, family-owned rafting base camp. We’ll get everyone outfitted in boats, eat some lunch, and head out for our first river run on the class 2-3 section of the Antigua river! This section of river will be a great warm-up for our week of paddling adventure! After our run, we return to Jalcomulco to relax and partake in more scrumptious Mexican food. Day 3: We will greet our first morning in Jalcomulco with a yoga class to warm up the body and relax the mind. After yoga, we are served a delicious Mexican breakfast to give us energy for our trip to one of the most beautiful rivers on earth! The Actopan is a spring-born river with crystal clear aquamarine water. The first rapid is a 25 ft waterfall/slide that anyone can run! It’s true! If you have never run a waterfall before, this is the place to do it! The rest of the river is class 2-3 with striking scenery. We finish the trip at a restaurant that serves incredible meals! Day 4: This morning we get an early start for a 3 day overnight trip on the Barranca-Grande river. The B.G. is a stunning river that runs through a spectacular canyon lined with luscious tropical foliage. The river is an exciting class 3 + run. The trip is raft supported so there is the option to raft if anyone chooses. Tonight we experience more local culture at our camp in Amititla, a small, typical coffee station high in the Sierra Madre. If we set up camp early enough, we will do a short yoga session. Day 5: We begin the day with a reinvigorating yoga session. After breakfast we head out on day 2 of our Barranca Grande adventure! Tonight we pull over at Monte Blanco, a picturesque camp, to stay the night. Day 6: Yoga and breakfast start the day. The river’s name changes from Barranca Grande to the Pescados. The Pescados is a beautiful class 3-4 section of river that runs through a scenic gorge, home to exotic birds and vegetation. This river is known for its sharp corners and fun rapids! The take-out bridge in Jalcomulco marks the end of our three day adventure. This afternoon we’ll have a chance to do a short hike through mango trees, up an enchanted canyon to a natural swimming hole where we can splash around! Tonight we get to experience a very special native tradition called a Temascal. The Temascal is the Aztec version of a Native Sweat Lodge. We will leave feeling cleansed, relaxed and blissful.
