Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan is popularly known as the Pink City and was founded in 1727 AD by one of the greatest rulers of the Kachhawaha clan, the astronomer king Sawai Jai Singh. Jaipur was the first planned city of its time, planned by Vidhyadhar Bhattacharya, a Bengali architect. Jaipur is called Pink city because, pink color was used at the time of making to create an impression of red sandstone buildings of Mughal cities and repainted in 1876, during the visit of the Prince of Wales. A strong wall encircles the old city, which was built with an aim to protect the city, even today it has a suggestion of formidable strength. Jaipur has wide straight avenues, roads, streets and lanes and uniform rows of shops on either side of the main bazaars, all arranged in nine rectangular city sectors (chokris). The city itself is an attractive creation worthy of universal admiration.
The city can be best explored on foot and the adventure loving visitor can go into the inner lanes to discover a whole new world not visible to the lay tourists from outside.
