On the banks of river Indus at an altitude of 11,000 feet, Leh is an important destination for Buddhist pilgrimage amidst breathtaking beauty. This land of majestic mountains is a complete beauty in itself. The roots of Buddhism were implanted here many centuries back and today this mountainous paradise boasts of many big and small Buddhist monasteries. Leh is also an important seat of Buddhist learning with followers from different parts of the world. It is essential to note that the monasteries are affiliated to different sects of Buddhism. Trip's dates are: 23 June – 9 July.
Day 1: Departure.
Day 2: Arrival in Delhi – Transfer to hotel near the airport for breakfast. Early morning transfer to apt and flight for Leh. arrive in Leh meet the assistant at the air port and transfer to the hotel, lunch in hotel. Rest in leisure for acclimatization, in the evening walk to the Leh market, dinner and overnight in Hotel.
Day 3: Leh - Hemis Festival - Leh - Hemis founded in the 1630's by Lama Staksang Raspa under the patrionage of king Singey Namgyal is 45 km from Leh where comes Thiksey monestry and Shey palace on the way. The monestry is the biggest and wealthiest monestry of Ladakh and is famous for its festival which is dedicated to the founder of the Ningmapa sect i.e. Padmasambava. Packed lunch. Evening dinner and overnight at hotel.
Day 4: Leh - Likir -Alchi – Uleytokpo - Drive 50 km to reach Likir monestry passing through the confluence of Indus and Zanskar river. The monestry belongs to the red hat sect and has a 75 ft high Matriya Buddha. Then drive to Alchi which is almost 20 km from liker. Alchi choskor (religious enclave) is one of the oldest monestry in Ladakh founded by the great translater Lotsava Rinchen Zangpo. The monestry is undertaken by the Unesco for its precious pantings. Pack lunch. Overnight and evening meal at Ulley ethnic resort situated 8km from Alchi.
Day 5: Uleytokpo - Lamayuru – Uleytokpo - Morning visit to Lamayuru which is 55 km from Uleyokpo. Lamayuru is the oldest monestry in Ladakh and the cave still exist in the assembly hall where Naropa meditated in the early 11th century. Not only the monestry but also the village and the moon landscape is accountable. Hot lunch in Lamayuru. Drive back to camp for dinner and overnight.
Day 6: Uleytokpo - Rezong – Leh - Visit Ridzong monestry in the morning located at a very isolate place. The monestry is founded by lama Tsultim Nima where he and his family renounce the world and meditated. His wife and sister assisted him while meditation and stayed down Rhw monestry. Drive back to Leh. Hot lunch in Uleytokpo camp. Dinner and overnight in hotel.
Day 7: Leh (Visit Shey, Thikse, Stok) - Visit Stok museum which is 20 km from Leh built at a small top hill in the year 1880 after Namgyal family had been deprived of their royal authority by the Dogra conquest .now a museum in which the family's heirlooms and relics are displayed. Drive to Thiksey monestry belong to the yellow hat sect founded by Stanzin Sherab in the early 17th century. The view of the monestry from the bottom is remarkable as well as the view of the village from the top of the monestry. Visit Shey palace which is around 5 kms from Thiksey. Shey is the most ancient capital of Ladakh and the palace has a huge statue of Buddha Shyakhamuni ( of copper and gold) build by Deldan Namgyal in the memory of his father Singey Namgyal in the early 17th century. Lunch in hotel. Drive back to Leh. Dinner and overnight in hotel.
Day 8: Leh – Sumoor - Drive to Sumoor crossing the highest motorable road in the world, Khardung la which is 5400 meters above sea level. Sumoor is 120 km from Leh and to lower altitude than Leh (10000 ft). Overnight at a fixed tent camp. Visit Samtanling Monastery. Lunch and dinner at camp.
Day 9: Sumoor - Deskit - Hundar – Sumoor - Drive to Diskit which is 25 km from Sumoor. Visit Diskit monestry founded by lama Sherab Zangpo of Stod around 1420 ad during the reign of king Dragspa. Then, drive to Hundar 7km from Diskit crossing the sand dunes with double humped camels. Dinner and overnight in fixed tent camp. Meals at the camp.
Day 10: Sumoor – Leh - Drive back to Leh from the same route. Pack lunch. Dinner and overnight in hotel.
Day 11: Leh – Tsomoriri - Drive to Tsomoriri located at a distance of 240 km from Leh. Maeh and Chumathang is another destination which comes on the way to Tsomoriri where the hot springs erupt. On the way tee marmots can be seen on the both sides of the roads and can see another small lake from the top of the Lamchung la. The lake is at higher altitude than Leh i.e. 14000 ft. evening visit the Korzok monestry which is around 135 years old. The people out there live a nomadic life and have the purest breed of yak. Overnight at Korzok in a pitched Tents – our tents. Pack lunch. Dinner at our tent.
Day 12: Tsomoriri – Tsokar - Drive to Tsokar whish is 76 km from Tsokar. Via Sumdo and Puga village are the places to stop on the way to Tsokar. Dinner and overnight in pitched tents - our tents. Hot lunch at the camp. Dinner and overnight at camp.
Day 13: Tsokar – Leh - Drive to Leh crossing the second highest motrable road in the world, Taglang la (5300mt) via Rumtse village and Upshi. Pack lunch. Dinner and overnight in Leh hotel.
Day 14: Leh - Phyang - Tak Tok Spituk - Leh - Drive to Phyang which is at a distance of 17 km from Leh. The monestry belong to the drigungpa teaching of Skyoba Jikstan Gonbo in Ladakh. The monestry was founded by chosle danma kunga, during the reign of king Jamyang Namgyal in the 16th century. Tak Tok is not mentioned! Drive to Spituk which is located on the road side while coming back to Leh. It is the first establishment of yellow sect in Ladakh founded by od-lde in the 11th century. Lunch in hotel. Dinner and overnight in Leh hotel.
Day 15: Leh - Delhi - Transfer to the apt and flight for Delhi. Accommodation in hotel. Rest of the day at leisure. Lunch free. Dinner in restaurant.
Day 16: Delhi - Full day sightseeing of Old and New Delhi. No Meals. Transfer to International airport to board flight for Italy.
Day 17: Departure.
