Driving sheep into the highlands for summer grazing is an old Icelandic tradition. In September the farmers ride into the mountains and collect their live-stock before the winter sets in. The Icelandic horse has become an indispensable tool in this work because of its strength and ability to run through even the most difficult terrain.
The last day we join the farmers and enjoy their singing and cheerfulness. You should be an experienced rider and have good balance on horseback, because you will ride with a handhorse in an often difficult terrain for many hours. Come and experience with us this Icelandic festival! Tour Itinerary: Day 1: Your flight should arrive latest between 2 pm and 4 pm at international airport Keflavík. From here you will be taken directly to the domestic airport in Reykjavík right in time for the domestic flight to Sauðárkrókur in North Iceland. We welcome you at Sauðárkrókur airport and drive to our cottages in Varmahlíð where you spend the first night of your holiday. After a welcome dinner we meet in the hot tub for a relaxing bath and a first get-together. In case you arrive earlier in Iceland, please keep us informed where we can meet you. Day 2 to 5: Depending on the official dates of the round ups, we choose a riding track that leads us through the magnificent landscape of Skagafjörður and its back-lands to meet the farmers. We join the farmers on their final day down to the corral and may even help them to bring the sheep down to the valley. A huge herd streaming down a mountain side like a raging river is a magnificent and unforgettable sight. While collecting and driving the sheep you experience the adventure of riding over extreme landscapes, as the Icelandic farmers have done for centuries. Next day the farmers sort out their sheep into their respective pens. We enjoy the atmosphere in the corral, helping the farmers. The festive atmosphere of Icelandic round-ups attracts both participants and onlookers, and you can be sure to have a good time! We enjoy the last evening in the hot tub, talking about all new experiences we made this week. Day 6: After our sheep work we enjoy today a last fun ride with our horses. In the late afternoon it is time to say good bye to the horses and guides. We take you to Sauðárkrókur airport and you fly back to Reykjavík. You check-in at the hotel and might want to go out for dinner in one of the stylish restaurants of the city. Day 7: The flybus will pick you up at the hotel and take you to Keflavík airport right in time for your flight home. Notes: Included in the price:
