Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Our tour begins with transfer from Sofia to Rodopi mountains. Accommodation at hotel for two nights. The hotel is a 5 min. walk from the local river, where Black Storks or young Red-backed and Lesser Grey Shrikes can be seen. Also the resident Syrian Woodpecker and Green Woodpecker, White and Black Storks can be spotted. Includes: (D).

Day 2: A trip to a rocky area, a crater of ancient volcano. The surrounding hills are extremely rocky, almost without vegetation, just some shrubs and no trees. Everything around is covered with basalt rocks and stones. Wherever you turn you see huge cliffs where such rare European birds like Black, Egyptian, Griffon Vultures, Golden and Imperial Eagles, Peregrine and Saker Falcons, Long-legged Buzzard, Black Stork, Rock Nuthatch breed. The Booted, Lesser Spotted and Short-toed eagles are also expected to nest in the region. We may see them while on their migrating flight. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 3: A rather long but necessary and hopefully, very interesting transfer awaits us. On the way we will stop at many places to watch local and migrating birds. Likely encounters are Lesser Spotted, Booted, Short-toed Eagles, Hobbies, Black Storks, White Storks, Syrian Woodpeckers, etc. In the late afternoon we arrive at the sea shore. Accommodation at the local hotel for three nights. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 4: A trip to a lake and its surroundings. This is the best place in Europe for watching large migrating birds: Raptors, Pelicans, Storks. It is also one of the best places for watching song birds and waders. We shall witness spectacular sights to remember for life: tens of thousands of Pipits, Wagtails, Larks, thousands of White storks. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 5: All day long we will be in similar area, lakes with extensive reed-beds on their lakesides. There are flooded meadows, marshes, low hills, and oak forests in surrounding countryside. These diverse habitats make this region one of the best in Europe for wetland and other species of birds. Species of birds likely to be seen there: same as on day 4. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 6: A transfer to the next main stop for the trip. We'll have a break for a lunch at forest restaurant. On the hills on the upper side of the road there are beautiful oak forests. Interesting birds to spot are: Great Spotted, Middle Spotted, Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers, Green and Grey-headed Woodpeckers, Black Woodpecker, Short-toed Treecreeper. Arrival and accommodation at the local hotel for 3 nights. This hotel is on the outskirts of a small town, perched on a hill overlooking the sea. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 7: Today we visit the sea shore. The steppe along it, is the southernmost outreach of the real East-European steppe. As far as the eye can see there is only steppe interspersed here and there with shrubs and small stunted trees. The steppe is cut by unexpectedly deep valleys. The coast is rocky, with abrupt white and reddish-orange cliffs falling away from over 200m into the clear bluish-green depths of the sea below. Interesting bird species to watch there: White Pelicans, Lesser Spotted, Booted, Short-toed Eagles, Harriers, Long-legged Buzzard, Red-footed Falcons. Thousands of small birds. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 8: A trip to the local lake and the surrounding area. A large sandy beach separates the lake from the sea. The lake with its extensive reed-beds and open water is one of the most important wetlands for migrating and breeding birds. Interesting bird species to watch: same as in day 7. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 9: Transfer to the Balkan mountain and accommodation at hotel . The hotel is built in the Bulgarian national architectural tradition of the 19th century, and is surrounded by old broad-leaved forests. Besides watching local birds like Dipper, Syrian and Great Spotted Woodpeckers we can also get acquainted with old Bulgarian architecture, crafts and traditions and buy some typical Bulgarian souvenirs. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 10: After breakfast we take a trip to the nearby monastery which is at approximately 1000 m above sea level. Beautiful deciduous forests offer the last chance to see Middle Spotted and Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers, Grey-headed and Black Woodpeckers, Sombre Tit and some other species on this tour. In an hour or so of birdwatching, transfer to Sofia and departure follow. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
