The cycling route goes from Moscow, the modern Russian capital, to the old one, St. Petersburg, through the oldest one, Novgorod the Great. You will be charmed by the spirit of olden times in Staritsa, Ostashkov, Staraya Russa. In Staraya Russa we will visit the museum of Fyodor Dostoyevsky, who wrote there his novels The Brothers Karamazov and The Possessed. We will pass the pearl of Russian nature - Lake Seliger, cross woody Valdai hills, where Great Russian Volga river starts. In Novgorod you will see its ancient Kremlin (Detinets), magnificent St. Sofia Cathedral and wonderful Russian Millennium Memorial. You will be surprised with the luxurious beauty of grand palaces and parks, built for Russian Tsars in St. Petersburg area. After the tour you can return to Moscow by comfortable night train or stay longer in the north capital of Russia.
Most roads along the route do not have heavy traffic and are paved with asphalt. (In the Adventure tour we have about 40 km of dirt or gravel roads.)
In Adventure (budget) tour we stay in less expensive hotels or cabins with double rooms or dorms. In cabins we usually cook ourselves. If you have a tent, you might enjoy occasionally sleeping outdoors in the Russian countryside. In St. Petersburg you may stay in a hotel instead of hostel.
In Comfort tour we stay in higher quality hotels (only double or single accommodation with WC and shower in the room).
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrival to Moscow. Accommodation in a hotel. City tour in Moscow (Metro, Red Square)
Day 2: Moscow – Chismena (train) – Rozdestvo (85 km). Joseph-Volokolamsk Monastery
Day 3: Rozhdestvo – Staritsa - Rzev (115 km). Assumption monastery in Staritsa.
Day 4: Rzev – Lake Volgo (115 km). Lake Volgo.
Day 5: Lake Volgo – Ostashkov - Zarech’e (70 km). Boat trip. Russian sauna.
Day 6: Zarech’e – Demiansk – Staraya Russa (95 km). Museum of F. Dostoevsky, spa museum.
Day 7: Staraya Russa - Veliky Novgorod (110 km). Open-air museum of wooden architecture "Vitoslavitsy", city-tour in Novgorod, Kremlin.
Day 8: Vel. Novgorod - Oredez (100 km).
Day 9: Train to St. Petersburg (20 km of cycling). City tour in St. Petersburg. Farewell dinner.
Day 10: Departure.
