Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrive Kigali. On arrival at Kigali airport, you are met by African Voyages guide. Transfer to Hotel in Kigali. Overnight at Hotel des Mille Collines/Hotel Umubano. Booked on Bed and Breakfast basis. Day 2: Drive from Kigali to Akagera National Park. An early start. Breakfast at the hotel. After breakfast, drive to Akagera National Park, situated on the eastern side of Rwanda. Early morning game drive, carrying a packed lunch. A canoe ride on the lake is also rewarding. Later, return to Kigali. Overnight at Hotel des Mille Collines/Hotel Umubano. Booked on Bed and breakfast. Day 3: Drive from Kigali to Nyungwe National park – 6 hours drive. After breakfast, depart for Nyungwe Forest National Park. Along the way, make stops at places of interest including local markets, the traditional palace of Rwanda’s Former King in Nyanza. Drive past green fields of tea scattered across the hillsides and the small wooden houses unique to the areas surrounding Nyungwe Forest. Overnight at ORTPN Gisakura Guest House. You are booked on Fullboard. Day 4: Day in Nyungwe National park. Guided nature walk in the forest to see a variety of animals and some of the three hundred bird species found here, which include the Rwenzori turaco and black and white casqued hornbill. Go on an escorted walk in search of large groups of colobus monkeys - sometimes as many as 400 in a group. OR go chimp tracking. Picnic lunch. Return late afternoon. Overnight at ORTPN Gisakura Guest House. Booked on Fullboard. Day 5: Drive from Nyungwe, back to Kigali then to Kinigi via Ruhengeri. After breakfast, return to Kigali. In Butare, visit the Botanical Gardens and a cultural museum. Arrive in time for lunch. [Approximate driving time: 6 hours] Afterwards drive north to Kinigi via Ruhengeri. Enjoy the rolling hills for which Rwanda is well known. [Approximate driving time: 3 hours] Overnight at Gorilla Nest Hotel. Booked on Fullboard mealplan. Day 6: Gorilla Tracking. Transfer to Kinigi Park Headquarters to track gorillas in Parc National des Volcans. Gorilla tracking through the forest, hills and swamps can be tough, arduous and tiring, sometimes taking up to 8 hours in the forest. But coming face to face with the great primates is well worth the effort. Overnight at Gorilla Nest Hotel (FB). Day 7: Additional/Optional Gorilla Tracking. In Parc National des Volcans: Either go gorilla tracking (on payment of US$375 gorilla permit supplement at time of booking) or climb the awesome Visoke volcano, or track the golden monkeys or trek to Karisoke Research Centre which Dian Fossey, the famous primatologist, set up, or visit local communities. Alternatively for those who are not up to it, simply relax at Camp. Overnight at Gorilla Nest Hotel on Fullboard basis. Day 8: Drive back to Kigali. 3 hours drive. After breakfast, depart for Kigali. If time allows, go for a tour of the city including shopping. Otherwise, transfer to airport for your flight.
