Day 2: Cricova and Orhei Vechi

Excursion to Underground wine city Cricova. Cricova cellars are ones of the greatest world natural cellars, situated deeply under ground on the territory of once overflowed mines. Today the joint stock company “Cricova winery” by right may complete the list of world wonders. Cricova is the subterranean wine town spread on over 60 km. We can be convinced of that walking in the streets and avenues with wines names – Cabernet, Merlot, Chardonnay…

Orhei Vechi situated in a picturesque setting. You will have the opportunity to visit the most interesting archaeological site housing the ruins of two cities (14th -16th century). Tartars settled here on their expansion to Western Europe. Continue with a visit to the well-maintained Orthodox cave monastery called St. Maria Dormata which was expanded and modified inside the cliffs by monks over the centuries. Christian churches provide magnificent scenery through the windows of the monastery which still functions today. Enjoy a local dinner in a nearby village and sample Moldavian dishes and wine. Lunch at Peasant House „Casa din Lunca” village Trebujeni.

Day 3: Capriana and Hincu monasteries

The Capriana Monastery is situated at the margin of a big forest between the villages Straseni and Capriana on the river Isnovat not far from Chisinau. It was founded in the XVth century during the rule of Alexandru cel Bun and reconstructed by Stefan the Great in 1470. The ensemble includes the Churches of Virgin's Assumption (1545), Saint Nicholas (1840) and Saint George (1907) which abut the abbot's house, the refectory and cells. The most ancient is the Virgin's Assumption Church founded by Petru Rares. It has a triconchal layout consisting of narthex, naos and apse. After reconstruction in 1820 by Metropolit G. Banulescu-Bodoni it kept unchanged only the decorative apses with arcature and the walls down to the socle level. In the course of construction a bell-house with a pyramidal roof and an octagonal dome with a bulbous turret over the naos were built.

Hincu monastery is located at a distance of 70 kilometers from Moldavian capital dated from 1678. Tracing the history of the Hincu monastery reveals that Mihalcea Hincu, a noted courtier of the 17th century got away from the attacks of the tartars and managed to land in the clearings of the Codri forest. It was here that he vowed to build a monastery if he along with his daughter, Paraschiva, managed to live the tartar invasion. A beautiful monastery in the heart of the forest.

Day 4: Tipova and Saharna monasteries

Tipova is famous for charming nature and the largest cave monasteries in Moldova and In Eastern Europe. There's a legend which says that the greatest ruler in the history of Moldova Stefan the Great (Stefan cel Mare) and his wife Maria Voichita got married in this monastery, another legend states that mythological poet Orpheus spent here his last years, he admired this nature... He was buried near the one of waterfalls. Archeologists found stone hearse which was opened and it is considered that this is the hearse Orpheus was buried in.

Saharna monastery: The first settlement here is dated back to II century B.C. The monastery here was built at the second half of XVIII century. It is surrounded by rocks which are covered by forest and this place has the feel of calmness. The highest rock is called Grimidon. Every morning inhabitants of the village look at the rock and pronounce the old saying "Grimidon is on its place". This means that everything is fine today. Grimidon is famous for St. Maria footstep which according to the belief is on the top of the rock. The legend says that the monk once saw a shining figure of St. Maria on the top of Grimidon. He went there and saw a footstep. Later chapel was built there. Nowadays pilgrims come here to see this footstep and the place is considered to be holy.
