Tobago is slowly being recognized as one of the Caribbean's best dive spots, still uncrowded and unspoiled, with excellent visibility (regularly 120 ft. and 70 to 90 being considered average), plenty of variety and challenge, and unsurpassed marine life. The diving is more suited to those with some experience. With most dives, you will drift effortlessly with the current so go with the flow and enjoy the ride.
The reefs of Tobago are incredibly well-endowed with coral growth thanks to the Equatorial Current from the Atlantic, the Guyana Current, and the flood waters of Venezuela's Orinoco River bringing a rich payload of plankton and micro-organisms. Every known species of hard coral and most of the soft coral flourish including the world's largest recorded Brain Coral. The fish population is also diverse with everything from tiny reef jewels such as Damsel Fish, Queen Angels, Rock Beauties, Rainbow Runners, Tarpon, Black Grouper, Cubera Snappers to eels, turtles, sharks (including the bus-size whale sharks), and Mantas. You dive from prioques, the traditional fisherman's craft. Some of the best diving is to be found on the south and west coast between Cove Point and Castara and between Charlotteville and Speyside on the northeast coast. The most popular dive sites include Flying Reef, the Shallows, the Mt. Irvine Wall offering good night diving, the Sisters, Arnos Vale, London Bridge, Cathedral, Batteaux Reef, Angel Reef, Bookends, Japanese Gardens and Blackjack Hole, and St. Giles Islands.
