Day 1: We start the day taking the plane to San Carlos, here you will see the San Juan River – a river that connects the immense Lake Nicaragua (or Cocibolca) with the Caribbean Sea. We will go to Solentiname Islands, and stay in Hotel Celentiname, after the accommodation we will visit some of the 36 islands of different sizes. This is an interesting cultural place where you will see the archaeological sites, pre-Colombian sculptures and caves. The fishermen and farmers that live on these islands have started to dedicate themselves to another famous activity since the 1960’s: creating primitive paintings using old traditions and drawing forms.
Day 2: Today your options are several and optional. There is a nice trail from the hotel around the island, passing pre-Colombian art, beautiful viewpoints, agriculture. We also offer fishing or kayaking or just relax with a book and enjoy the views.
Day 3: We take a boat to Los Guatuzos, passing the beautiful Papaturro River: Birding, caimans, reptiles, it is easily to observe a multitude of beautiful wildlife and spectacular tropical flora. In the afternoon we walk an air bridge trough the trees, perfect to take good pictures and be in contact with the amazing wildlife after the bridge we will make a nature walk in a young forest. Lots of orchids! We will do a night boot tour, showing you birdlife, caimans and lots more.
Day 4: Today we leave for the San Juan River passing the bird island Sapotillo! We invite you to learn about the important San Juan River. We will cruise first to San Carlos, from here we will take the public boat to El Castillo(public boot, not included in price: US$ 6 each), an impressive fortress, ones build to protect this important treading route. In El Castillo we will be picked up and ones again cruise further down the river until we reach the eco-lodge Bartola. (Lunch not included this day)
Day 5: Today we visit The Biological Reserve Indio Maiz. Here we are going to walk in the middle of the forest who has many of the oldest trees in Central America, we will get in there with an expert local guide who will show us the different plants used us natural medicine, birds, monkeys, snakes (if we are quite). And the end of the walking we can swim en the river Bartola which connects with San Juan River. (Optional is to go up river, beautiful nature and swimming, US$ 30 / 2 people) Back to Bartola Lodge.
Day 6: This last day you may walk one of the many trails starting from the lodge or just relax enjoying the views over the river. (If you like the lodge offers guided walks, you pay the guide separate)
Day 7: We bring you from the lodge to El Castillo. From here you take the boat to San Carlos (not included) - Fly back to Managua. Transport to your hotel, fly back home or continue your trip with one of our many extensions!
