Day 1: After pickup from the hotels, we drive to Banjul Ferry terminal where we are ferried across to Barra on the other Northern Region of The Gambia. From here, we drive to The Gambia/Senegal border of Amdalai where all travel documents are inspected and endorsed as seen on departure. About 200 meters away from Amdalai, lays another Senegalese border-village of Karang. This is where Senegal entry stamp on all travel documents will be acquired before setting officially on the adventure to the Fathala National Park of Senegal.
Upon arrival at the Park, we will be riding on a jeep that will take us round the park for spotting herbivorous animals like: Rhinos, Giraffes, Gazelles, Warthogs, and Antelopes etc. After this phase, we will take a break during which, we will drive to the hotel “Les Paletuviers” to be served lunch with a difference! After lunch, we will check-in for the night and the swimming pool will be at our disposal to cool us off the heat if desired. Later in the afternoon, we will cruise in pirogues to Sipo Island where there are about 75 inhabitants most of whom are women.
Once on the Island, we are accorded a guided tour by the village Chief who doubles as the Witch Doctor and obtains her traditional medicine from the local plants on the Island. Since there are no hospitals, electricity, safe drinking water supply or any means of communication, their only means of transportation is by rowing small canoes to reach the mainland for all their needs. They live mainly on fish and fish products. After the visit on the Island, we return to the hotel to get ready for a delicious buffet dinner which is followed by a spectacular African entertainment.
Day 2: Early morning, soon after breakfast in the hotel, we depart for one of Senegal’s provincial towns of Kaolack to visit its local market, salt factory and other places of historic significance. After sightseeing around the town, we will drive to the border town of Farafenni in The Gambia. After completing the usual formalities at the border, we drive to Tendaba camp about 160 km from Banjul. At Tendaba Camp, we will night-stop in comfortable African huts. In the evening, a delicious African bush pig buffet will be served to be followed by a traditional Gambian dance entertainment to be performed by the women of the village living by the river side.
Day 3: Early in the morning, after breakfast at Tendaba Camp, we will go for a boat trip in the African mangroves where hopefully, we will be sighting the crocodiles and various types of birds in the Gambia. After the boat trip, we will relax by the pool to cool off the heat. After lunch is served, we will take the afternoon to go on a bush safari in jeeps for spotting: warthogs, hyenas, baboons, antelopes etc. In the evening after dinner is served, there will be traditional African entertainment till late in the night.
Day 4: In the morning, after breakfast, we will travel to Kanilai National park to see animals like: camels, zebras, buffalos, ostriches, dwarf and the Nile crocodiles among others. While in Kanilai, we will have the privilege to see how rice and groundnut which are staple food and cash crops of the country respectively are cultivated. After the safari and lunch at Kanilai, we will then set for the journey back to the hotel in Bakau.
Note: Although Senegal and The Gambia are close neighbors, life style and their way of living are different. Senegal was colonized by the French whilst The Gambia was colonized by the British. These parts of both Senegal and The Gambia we visit are very remote and in some parts during the road trip, we view real African villages as shown on TVs back home.
