Prepare yourself for a safari that will take you to a pure river bursting out of wild highlands and then meandering lazily through an African wilderness. The Okavango Delta is the largest freshwater wetland in Africa; in Botswana's arid and unforgiving bush it's an oasis where you'll find one of the greatest concentrations of wildlife in Africa. Sometimes called a 'swamp', the Okavango is anything but. Moving, mysterious, placid, gentle and beautiful, from a wide and winding channel it spreads through tiny, almost unnoticeable channels that creep away behind a wall of papyrus reed, into an ever expanding network of increasingly smaller passages. Overnight at Lodge or Tented Camp. Day 7: Maun. Leave Moremi Reserve after breakfast and drive south to Maun. Transfer to the lodge. Rest of the day for visiting Maun. As recently as 20 years ago Maun had the image of a Wild West Frontier town, but the completion of the tar road from Nata has changed all of this. Modern shopping complexes have replaced the old trading stores. Overnight at Maun Lodge. Includes: (FB). Days 8-10: Makgadikgadi Pans Game Reserve – Nxai Pans National Park Early morning, after breakfast leaving Maun to Makgadikgadi Pans e Nxai Pans, Makgadikgadi consists of two main pans: Sowa in the east and the much larger Ntwetwe in the west, as well as a series of smaller pans. These are a relic of an enormous inland lake, larger then Lake Victoria, which covered much of northern Botswana half a million years ago. Dust devils dance across the floor of the pan, while shimmering mirages play havoc with the imagination. Contributing to Makgadikgadi unique atmosphere is the total silence. One of the chief attractions of the Makgadikgadi area is Kubu Island, an isolated granite outcrop studded with stunted baobab trees. Makgadikgadi Pans National Park incorporates the north western corner of Ntwetwe Pan and is a lovely mosaic of open grassland and shimmering pans, fringed by groves of tall palm trees. Lush riverine forests grow along the Boteri River, which forms the park’s western boundary. Nxai Pan National Park is adjoining the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park to the north. Centered around a 40 square kilometer grass-covered pan interspersed with acacia tree islands, it supports large herds of blue wildebeest, burchell’s zebra and gemsbok between December and April. Overnight at Khumaga and Kubu Island. Accommodation in a Safari Tent. Includes: (FB). Days 11 & 12: Khama Rhino Sanctuary. Today we will transfer south from Kubu Island to Khama Rhino Sanctuary a community based wildlife project, established in 1992 to assist in saving the vanishing rhino, restore an area formerly teeming with wildlife to its previous natural state and provide economic benefits to the local Botswana community through tourism and the sustainable use of natural resources. Overnight in Khama. Includes: (FB). Day 13: Gaborone After breakfast we move to south east to Gaborone through Palapye and Mahalapye. On the way out we will stop at Mochudi, capital of the Bakgatla tribe.Built around Phuthadikobo Hill, the historical core of Mochudi has some fine examples of traditional Bakgatla houses and granaries. The buildings are centered around the "kgotla" (courtyard) where tribal meetings and court session are held. A few kilometers northeast of Mochudi we will reach Matsieng, a hole in a sheet of rock. Surrounding the rock are a number of engravings of animal spoor and also one of a human footprint. The Botswana people believe that the very first human beings and animals emerged from this hole. Overnight at Hotel in Gaborone. Includes: (FB). Day 14: Gaborone - Johannesburg. Breakfast and morning at leisure. Transfer at the Airport to catch the flight to Johannesburg. Notes:
